Review

“Shapiro has rescued from oblivion a wondrous tale of exploration. The Stowaway is a thrilling adventure that captures not only the making of a man but of a nation.” — David Grann, bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon“A high-concept true story for the ages.... Shapiro narrates this period piece with gusto.” — Los Angeles Times“The Stowaway proves that fact is stranger and funnier and more amazing than fiction. Laurie Gwen Shapiro artfully draws the reader into the tale of Billy Gawronski, a dreamer and adventurer. Through the wild story of his travels to Antarctica, we see history come vividly to life.” — Susan Orlean, bestselling author of Rin Tin Tin“Laurie Gwen Shapiro wrote The Stowaway like a Jack London novel: with a sense of adventure, wonderful detail, a lineup of intriguing characters, and above all a great story. This is the best of nonfiction.” — Mark Kurlansky, bestselling author of Paper“A fascinating window into... the exuberant 1920s and the crushing Depression that followed.... A must-read.” — USA Today “Inspired by [an] engrossing yet little-known case of derring-do, [The Stowaway] evokes the magic of early 20th-century New York.” — The New York Times“What has the world come to when sled dogs and short wave radio mix, when wooden sailing barks compete with aeroplanes, when ‘Eskimos’ figuratively dance with flappers, and all of this is captured and disseminated by the first public relations hucksters? Laurie Gwen Shapiro’s The Stowaway is magnificent.” — Bob Drury & Tom Clavin, bestselling authors of The Heart of Everything That Is“The Stowaway tells one of the most engaging, but forgotten, stories from the Age of Exploration. A fascinating and charming book—I highly recommend it!” — Douglas Preston, bestselling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God  “Isn’t this how history sometimes is best told, when a passing curiosity melds with diligent work? The Stowaway is a charming book, a glimpse of history that, by definition, fascinates and delights.” — Minneapolis Star-Tribune“Laurie Gwen Shapiro's The Stowaway is full of twists, turns, and moments of pure wonder—both joy to read and a surprisingly insightful tale of scientific exploration at its generous and courageous best.” — Deborah Blum, bestselling author of The Poisoner’s Handbook

I took a chance on this book and was rewarded famously. Author Laurie Shapiro has brought to life a little-remembered account of a teen-aged boy who was determined to live a dream of visiting the forbidding continent of Antarctica even if he had to become a stowaway to do it. Admiral Richard Byrd was planning a scientific study to spend the winter on the continent and despite repeated rejections after being discovered as a stowaway William "Billy" Gawronski was finally allowed to join with parental permission. Although Gawronski was not among those chosen to spend the winter he did prove his worthiness to Byrd and gained the respect of others. Another young hero in the book is the much-decorated boy scout Paul Siple who was among those who did spend the winter with Byrd on the continent. Siple went on to become an accomplished polar explorer and author and coined the term "windchill factor."The book relates that fame is fleeting and despite a ticker-tape parade in which Billy Gawronski took part he found the country in the midst of the Depression of the 1930s and found it difficult to find his niche in life. After a failed marriage Billy spent several years in the merchant marines. Eventually finding a new spouse he lived his life out happily.Thankfully the author found Billy's wife a treasure trove of assistance in writing this book along with one of Billy's sons who, unfortunately, was and remains incarcerated in prison. Billy's other son passed away from a very difficult life. The book contains fourteen pages of photos and is a gem of a book. Some books I take a chance on and end up donating them to our local library. This one will remain in my own library. This is a story that will not disappoint you.

I found this to be an outstanding read about an event, ie a young man stowing away on one of Byrd's trips to Antarctica, that I was not aware of. Easy to read, a lot of tangential information about all else that was going on at the time, an appropriate and manageable length of 200 pages, and a lot of personal information about the stowaway thanks to his wife who is still alive. I read a lot of non fiction ( three of my favorites, John Barry's "Rising Tide", Daniel Brown's "The Boys in the Boat", and Timothy Egan's "The Worst Hard Times" ). If you, too, liked those books, and also Lansing's " "Endurance" I think you'll like Ms. Shapiro's book also. Five Stars all the way

I'll start with the end: the author doesn't give many details on the last 25+ years of the subject, William Gawronski's life. That made a well written story feel rushed and flat at the end. That said, it's a fun, quick read. She brings to life certain characters and re-lives historical events that don't get much press. It isn't deep history and could be read by people of various reading levels.I wish she had done a little more work not only on the last couple decades of his life, but his time in World War 2; however, being that Gawronski is not a famous historical figure and the author was mostly (I assume) going from family stories for the parts of his life after the expedition, there may not have been much material.Either way, it's entertaining and I recommend it.

Uggggh. I hate to be negative, especially regarding the work of a fellow writer, but this was just an awkward series of vowels and consonants for me. I bought this to read on my own trip to the polar region and despite several determined attempts, I could not finish it. The writing itself was bland...saltine cracker bland and the character development was ghostly. I honestly do not understand the 5 star reviews.

I liked but not loved the book. Great well told stories but seemed to be more filler stories than the main one. I felt the passion of the main character and the story moves along quickly.

Factual but not my favorite

Two stars is a gift! One reviewer compared this to a school report. It reads like a drawn out newspaper article and in many cases it literally is. Zero adventure. I don't enjoy dissing someone else efforts but it's just sssoooo boring! Thankfully less than 200 pages of actual reading.

I was left craving more of the details of the journey and the experience of being on Antartica. I understand that this is more of an academic book. However, there was just too many dates, names and details that the story suffered. More imagery for the journey is what I would have loved to have read.

Review

" [Ingersoll] make[s] a compelling and sobering case for the significant impact of this extremist movement Recommended."--CHOICE"A thoughtful and important resource for scholars and students wishing to know more about an important movement in modern American religion and politics."--Church History"This is the first book-length study of the shadowy but influential right-wing Christian Reconstruction movement. Julie Ingersoll reveals it all--its history, ideas, and current political impact--with sensitivity and laser precision. This is a major contribution to the study of religion in public life, the book to read in understanding the dark potency of America's religious right." --Mark Juergensmeyer, author of Terror in the Mind of God: The Global Rise of Religious Violence "During the last four decades, Christian Reconstruction, a theological movement seeking to remake the United States on the basis of biblical law, has shaped American evangelicalism. With scholarly acumen and subtle argument, Building God's Kingdom traces this influence in contemporary struggles over education, the family, and politics. In these pages, Ingersoll guides readers through Reconstruction and finds a logical, successful, and authoritative worldview that has been embraced by legions of pastors, well-known politicians, and popular pundits. This is not a conspiracy book. Instead, with quiet intensity, it reveals the power of religious influence to change the direction of a culture." --Diana Butler Bass, author of Christianity After Religion: The End of Church and the Birth of a New Spiritual Awakening "Historians have long debated the role of Reconstructionism in the formation of fundamentalist politics. Julie Ingersoll's intrepid research and astute analysis demonstrates that the thought of Rousas John Rushdoony and others did indeed shape the nascent discontent that emerged in the late 1970s as the Religious Right." --Randall Balmer, author of Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory "Ingersoll has turned a bright spotlight on a little-known group. Building God's Kingdom exposes the Reconstructionists' many areas of influence and is crucial both for a better understanding of American politics and a more thorough understanding of right-wing religious groups."--Nova Religio Reviews

Julie Ingersoll has a unique perspective in that she was for years involved in fundamentalist Christianity and even participated in peaceful actions against abortion clinics. What the book posits is that a very small group of Reconstructionists have had a much greater influence in the larger fundamentalist world than their numbers might suggest. The group's influence extends to pseudo historian David Barton, who has been on a committee on curriculum for Texas' public schools and whose writings are taken as gospel by millions (despite his last book being removed from the shelves by the publisher because even fundamentalist Christian historians said it was a load of bollocks).Reconstructionist thinking, according to Ingersoll, also heavily influences homeschool curriculum and the concept that the family (with father in charge) is solely responsible for educating children and that public schools are socialist and should be eliminated.Ingersoll traces this thinking back to R.J. Rushdoony and shows how his writings influenced others over the years. All in all it's a fascinating look into a world that hardly anyone in the U.S. realizes even exists. The broad Christian world -- including mainline and progressive flavors -- have largely not even heard of Rushdoony, and even some of the fundamentalists who teach his doctrines are unaware of the Reconstructionist origin of their teachings in some cases, according to the author. Their thinking even extends to far-right politicians who are not part of the Reconstructionist thought. But the end goal for the movement is for the U.S. to one day have a majority who share their beliefs -- a multigenerational effort that could take hundreds of years -- at which point their "godly" civil government will work toward their goals and Old Testament crimes will be punished by civil authorities with the punishments given in the Bible.Personally, I can't wait for their barbaric theocracy to begin. Fortunately, it likely never will come to pass. Maybe this book will help the broader public recognize the Reconstructionists' influence and their goals.

I loved this book. It offers a scholarly yet oddly personal assessment of Rushdoony and Reconstructionism's broad influence. I say odd because it's not typical for a University Press book (Oxford no less!) to be written in such a personal tone. Ingersoll is both insider and outsider, having been in the movement for a while and now outside it as a Religious Studies professor. I thought she did an admirable job at self disclosure even as she maintained an even-handed tone in her analysis. I learned a lot about the various overlapping networks of Reconstructionists and fellow travelers. She did an excellent job summarizing the key concepts--postmillennialism, sphere sovereignty, dominion, partriarchy, etc.

This is an interesting study of Reconstructionism and its influence. There seemed to me perhaps a danger that too much influence was being attributed to Rushdoony and other reconstructionists, without other sources - most obviously Schaeffer - being explored in more detail. But this is, nonetheless, a very useful book and well worth reading alongside McVicar's Christian Reconstruction

This is a must-read if you want to understand Ted Cruz et al.

Ingersoll does an excellent job of explaining the philosophical and theological roots (often unacknowledged) of today's so-called Christian Right. Although the writing can get a bit academic at times, her content is helpful and informative, and she makes a compelling case, without ever explicitly advocating it, for Christians not of this persuasion to become more courageous in refuting the 20th century heresy that is Christian Reconstructionism.

Before reading this book, I'd never heard of Christian Reconstrctionism-- but now I can see its influence everywhere I the struggle between right-wing authoritarianism and progressive pluralism. If you want to understand the thinking (and passionately held beliefs) behind much of Tea Party and religious right conservatism, this book is a great place to start. If you lean toward reason and rationality, if you believe in democracy and social justice, this book will give you an insight into the mind of your enemy. And he is your enemy.

I appreciated the insight into ultra right-wing Christian conservatism as it has developed historically..

If you want to understand why the Religious Right is so, so wrong, this book is essential reading.

Lola Fraser had met Hamish Gibson that morning when they briefly crossed each other’s path for the fundraiser that had taken place in town. After a long and difficult day in the ICU, Lola needed a large drink, and maybe some physical comfort. That’s where she saw Hamish for the second time, and sparks flow. Lola knows she shouldn’t go there: Hamish is her roommate and best friend Grace’s brother, but Grace doesn’t need to know, and Hamish is not staying. Until he comes back a few months later for some training, and Grace obligingly let him have her room. Neither Lola nor Hamish has forgotten that night, but it cannot happen again.TEMPTED BY MR. OFF-LIMITS is a perfectly wonderful, and wonderfully perfect romance! I had never read a medical romance before – I didn’t quite know what to expect, and I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it – but Amy Andrews is a favourite author of mine, so I took a chance, and I’m so happy I did! I must say that Hamish is a totally dreamy hero, and I fell in love with him much quicker than Lola did; he is honestly everything I look for a male protagonist in a romance novel: he’s straightforward, he is naturally sexy; he doesn’t come across as arrogant, but full of honest self-confidence; he’s a caring individual and he understands Lola’s concern given that he is a paramedic, and she an ICU nurse. Amy Andrews’ own background as a nurse gives much credibility and authenticity to the story, and the hospital drama is exciting, enlightening as it deals at some point with organ transplant. I also loved how the medical and romance parts flowed so seamlessly to form a smooth and very compelling narrative.Hamish is a country boy at heart; he thrives on stability, Lola a nomad, and while their attraction and fondness for each other, I had no idea how they would ever work together to find their happily ever after. Hamish is open to compromise, but Lola not so much, and how they finally found a way was just fabulous. I loved that neither Hamish nor Lola assumed that their relationship was off-limits: Grace warns Lola quite specifically that it is not a good idea. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the Australian setting, and I had to google those jacaranda flowers to see for myself what they looked like – they play a very important part in the story. The writing is, naturally, flawless, the banter between Hamish and Lola so normal and delightful; I loved this romance so much because it felt normal, it was entirely believable from beginning to end; it felt like it could happen to me, like this is what true love really should be. I have nothing but very good things to say about TEMPTED BY MR. OFF-LIMITS: it is a quick read, perfectly paced, and utterly lovely and delightful!I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am not one that reads a lot of medical romance. I am glad I took a chance and read Lola and Hamish’s story.Lola had a gypsy heart and decided she would never marry or settle down anywhere permanently just like her Great Aunt May. She grew up in the country and planned to never return to that way of life. She enjoys her job as an ICU nurse and feels fulfilled in her career. She doesn’t want to be tied down by love.Hamish was a country boy at heart and wanted to work as an acute care paramedic in the rural areas. He loved a challenge and was in town for extra training before taking on a rural post. He also just happens to be Lola’s best friend’s brother.I loved how the two developed a relationship and fulfilled the needs in each other’s life. Hamish had a kindness about him that Lola needed. She also provided comfort in his life when he needed it. I like stories that show the human emotion and this is one of them.I received a copy from the author to read and review. All feelings and words are my own opinion.

Amy Andrews is truly a gifted storyteller. She is quickly becoming a must read author for me. What I like is that her stories and her characters are relatable. Nothing is contrived or overworked. The day to day lives of her characters are grounded in a reality that is genuine, heartbreaking, and inspiring. It's clear the author has a connection to the medical profession and that allows her to bring the reader further into the story. Andrews is one of those authors that writes romance and tells a story at the same time.Hamish...wow!! He's really is everything a book boyfriend is supposed to be. He's the perfect daydream. Lola, I have to say, is a frustrating young woman and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her take the fall into love. The shared understanding of their jobs, the ups and downs, makes their romance so much more solid and sweet and enviable. There is nothing not to love about this book.

MS Andrews always writes a book that is sure to leave me a very happy reader and this one is no exception, I have just had a lovely steamy, sizzling and moving journey to a gorgeous HEA with two very opposite people (or maybe they are not) one city one country, but both so very much attracted to each other that staying just friends is not going to happen.Lola Fraser is an ICU nurse in a big city hospital she works hard and loves her job and is fun-loving single gypsy, she longs to travel like her great aunt. She grew up in the sticks and getting out of Doongabi was the best thing she had done, but when she offers to share her apartment with her best friend’s brother Hamish Gibson the world as Lola knows it is turning, sex for fun and de-stressing is changing the way she feels.Hamish is a real country boy and when he comes to the city to take a course to further him in his paramedic career staying with Lola for a few months should be easy and fun even if they had shared a very steamy night together a few months before that was only to help her sleep that night. But when there is a tragedy in the city and both Hamish and Lola are emotionally affected this brings them back together and Hamish is losing his heart to the girl who is always going to be single. This really is a beautiful story with heart wrenching cases on the road for Hamish and in the ICU for Lola and together they lean on each other but Lola is still determined to be single and travel the world and she is stunned that Hamish falls in love with her, this doesn’t sit well with her and then when a closer loss for Lola makes her see that there is room in her caravan for two the world is a happier place for her and Hamish. I loved this one from start to finish, fabulous moving story with sizzle to boot and yes it left me smiling, lovely location and Christmas and New Year, this is one that I highly recommend.

From Kirkus Reviews

This collection is not only the handsomest gathering of Inuit folktales ever, but one that will bring readers as close to a living oral tradition as printed material can. After working with folklorists and Inuit storytellers, Norman recasts ten stories from every corner of this widespread culture. While versions of several stories appeared in his Northern Tales (1990), they will be new to young readers. Most have a humorous cast: A shaman enrages a rude visitor with a succession of hilarious, earthy insults; stubborn Uteritsoq ignores good advice and has his ``stomach guts'' stolen by a moon spirit; when the Ark becomes locked in Hudson Bay ice, a crabby Noah refuses to have anything to do with the local villagers, and so is forced to eat many of his animals--plus a woolly mammoth that comes on board. Between each tale's two or three magical, formal, full-page paintings, the Dillons recapitulate events in a small black-and-white running frieze, composed of human and animal figures done in a style evocative of Inuit art. A pleasure to see, to hold, and to read--this is elegant bookmaking matched to entertaining, perceptive storytelling. Story notes appended. (Folklore. 9+) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. We checked this book out from the library and fell in love. It's a great book to read to a pre-reader because the illustrations running along the top of the page depict almost everything happening in the story and she/he can "look along" with the text. And as other readers mentioned the illustrations -- friezes -- are extremely beautiful. The stories also have a different sensibility from many books for Western readers thus all in all this book is an alluring and engaging cultural experience for a child unfamiliar with Inuit culture. And like others, I keep buying copies to give as gifts.

Entertaining stories that are just a little different. I read these aloud to students and they really enjoy the matter-of-fact tone of them and the unusual and sometimes comical and tasteless (to their suburban sensibilities) imagery. You won't be disappointed.

This is my third copy because every time I read a story to a friend, they want to borrow the book.

I read a story from this book to a class of college students, who all loved it, except one young woman who got very, very angry, and cried out, "Why didn't I have stories like this when I was a child?"

Aside from the wonderfully told stories, this book is an exceptional example of bookmaking, from the white on white end pages to the frieze-like illustrations by the Dillons that tell the story along the top of the page. A great choice for a gift book.
