"A voice deeper than God's." That's the way many of us who encountered Dr. Marney described him. I heard Dr. Marney preach in person a couple of times and several times on recordings, and I had an opportunity to have lunch with him on July 4 1978 at the "Furman University Pastor's Conference," but he passed away on July 3 at his desk at Lake Junaluska while preparing the "Lyman Beecher Lectures" to be given at Yale in 1980. Around the Furman campus, a wonderful joke he probably would have approved of and which G-d would have enjoyed as well, "Wonder what G-d is going to do now that he has real competition?"One sermon that gave direction to a portion of my theology was based on 1 Corinthians 13:12, "For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known." The sermon centered on musings about his death. Paraphrasing, he said, "I have no desire to sing in a heavenly choir or play a golden harp. I don't want to live in a heavenly mansion. I want to find G-d because he has some questions to answer." He went on to say, "This is not a statement of unfaith; it is a statement of faith based on Paul's promise in Corinthians."John J. Carey makes it clear in his introduction that it is difficult to write about Marney's theology for he was no systematic theologian. He was a preacher. He preached to his congregation and to other pastors who came to Interpreter's House, a retreat center he founded for pastors who were in various stages of crisis. His theology is to be found in his preaching. It was at Interpreter's House that some of his deepest theological ideas were expressed as well as delivering sermons, lectures and private talks in the area of pastoral care. While dealing with pastors who came to Interpreter's House, he developed a deep understanding of the perils pastors faced and the ways in which church leadership could break a pastor's spirit. At the House, he brought together mental health resources that sought to rescue those men and women. He was one of only a few Southern Baptist pastors who had influence outside the Southern Baptist Convention. He occupied that rare air with A.T. Robertson, Southern Seminary's Greek Scholar, John Broadus, historian, Wayne Oates, pastoral Care, and John Claypool, pastor and eventually an Episcopalian priest. It was as a preacher, "a classical rhetorician" as some have called him, that he made his mark. He took the task seriously. He read widely. He knew Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Augustine, but he also knew Harnack, Barth, and Brunner. He was able to take both classic and contemporary voices and bring them to the person in the pew. Marney was also a churchman, and even though he was often at odds with the Southern Baptist faith of his youth and his calling, it is from Southern Baptists that his theology of Church found it's home. Listen to Marney's own words:"Everywhere I go people ask me why I remain a Baptist. Being a Baptist is like being in a dark, slimy well: it's cold, clammy, uncomfortable and filled with lots of creepy things. For years I tried to climb out, but it was hard: the walls were slippery, I was half-blind, and there were impediments everywhere. Finally, however, I got to the top. I looked around at last to see what the world was like in other denominations. After I had a good look I just dropped back in the well. (p.138)In the final analysis, I found in Cary's book an affirmation of what little I had known of Marney before. He was a churchman, a pastor, and a preacher's preacher. There is a lingering wish that he would have had the interest and time to "pull it all together" and give a systematic theology of what it is to be a pastor. Most of us, however, will remember him for his oratory skills. It is a shame, for he was much more to him than that. He had a pastor's heart with a special empathy for other pastors. Pastors who had been to the mountain top with Jesus and had felt the call to service only to find that service lay in the difficult "valley of the shadows." The work of being a pastor is overwhelming and Marney had much more to offer to those in the valley.
