It may seem odd to think that an entire book devoted to a single firearm could have interest beyond the hardcore weapons buff. And although devotees of weapons will indeed find this interesting, it deserves a broader audience. Particularly in a post Cold War world, it turns out that the AK-47 is more influential than the nuclear weapon, despite its seemingly lower scale of lethality. This book explores both the origin and the geopolitical implications surrounding what is undisputedly the most widely distributed automatic weapon on the planet. It explains why it was successful from a mechanical standpoint, how it came to be so ubiquitous, and the consequences of its widespread dissemination. There's also a fairly lengthy (and heartbreaking) section devoted to the early history of the M-16, America's intended answer to the AK. It's not exactly uplifting, but it is a very realistic and thoughtful examination of how something as simple as a gun has changed the course of whole societies. Usually not for the better, but that's real life...and death.

This manages to be a history of automatic weapons in general, the AK-47, and also the M-16.It is three books in one. All are quite good. The history of early machine guns and the Gatling Gunare especially well done, with many colorful characters. The main part of the book concerns Kalashnikov, who turns out to be a more complex personthat the usual "Hero of the Proletariat" story put out by Pravda. The story of the M-16 is depressing, especially if you are an American. I look at the F-35, andall I see is an M-16 with wings. Many of our pilots are going to be killed by the F-35.I recommend this book.

1st saw an AK late 66 at Ft Bragg. had asked to look at Stg 44, foreign wpns section/SF. M/Sgt Scoggins said "Take it apart" Looked at it and in 30 seconds figured out how. Saw one jam in ,Nam, 67/68. Magazine 1/3rd full of clay consistency of plasticine. If the VC had had time or presence of mind to swish mag in water for 15 or 20 seconds AK would have functioned. Carried one my last 6 months in Nam. Saw a SEAL with a Stoner 63 in the LMG set-up, would have been a much better rifle for US troops. Carried FN C1A1 4 years in Canada, then M-14-2 years in US, liked FN but heavy. M-14 heavy and a complicated delicate deer rifle compared to FN and AK Have studied and handled military sidearms almost 60 years, this the most in-depth and intellectualy honest book or study I have seen. Also does superb jobs on the history/politics of the AK and the psychological things one go,s thru if their weapon is trustworthy or NOT trustworthy.

Overall, I enjoyed this book very much. The author's style is very readable, and he manages to tell a complex story in a short span. Some of the minor details are incorrect, such as those regarding restrictions on Germany's arms production, but I always cross-reference other sources when reading a book like this, and they are admittedly minor errors. The early chapters regarding the Gatling and Maxim guns did become tedious after awhile, but the writing does pick up afterward. My final complaint is that the author states in the beginning that he will not make an attempt to moralize for or against the weapons mentioned in the book, yet at times he does exactly that, albeit in an offhand way.Still, it was a pleasant read, and fairly informative while simultaneously being entertaining. I enjoyed the way in which the author provided glimpses into the personalities and feelings of many of the individuals presented. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a crash course introduction to the history of automatic weapons in war.

This book is a great source of information, and gives a good, well rounded view on the history of rapid fire and how it changed modern warfare. It is not just about development of the AK-47, but it does focus a good amount on the Kalash and its variants as well as the life and times of Mikhail Kalashnikov. There is a surprising amount dedicated to other weapons that led to the need for the Kalashnikov rifle as well as the subsequent scramble of the United States military to compete when other rifles were falling short in the battlefields of Vietnam. This might all seem to be superfluous until one realizes that warfare is an ever changing reality in our world. With each new advance in technology or change in environment the methods and weapons adapt out of necessity. My only beef with the book is toward the end, where Chivers seems to lean slightly toward an implication that the designer might be somewhat to blame for the use or influence of his weapon in war, which I find to be a bit of an unfair judgement. Guns are and always will be tools, with the moral responsibility resting on those who use them, and in war particularly, the leaders who send young men and women to die for their political and financial reasons.

Superb read. CJ Chivers does an excellent investigative report about the history of rapid-firing, from Gatling to Maxim and finally to Kalashnikov. The book is an easy read thanks to Chivers' amazing story-telling capacity. You don't need to be a gun-buff or a military-affairs expert to find this book entertaining as well as educative. Though, that goes both ways. If you are a gun-enthusiast or a military expert who wants to deepen knowledge in the AK firearms family, this ain't that book. It's more like a "context" book, giving you an ample description of the row of ideas that lead to the concept of "automatic firearms". This is a history book, well reaserched and even better well written.
