Review

“Her Ladyship is a determined and canny woman in search of dragons--I wholeheartedly approve!” ―Melanie Rawn, bestselling author of Touchstone, on A Natural History of Dragons“Saturated with the joy and urgency of discovery and scientific curiosity.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)“If you've ever secretly wished dragons were real, this story is for you. Fans of Naomi Novik and Mary Robinette Kowal will especially enjoy this book.” ―RT Book Reviews“Told in the style of a Victorian memoir, courageous, intelligent and determined Isabella's account is colorful, vigorous and absorbing. A sort of Victorian why-what-whodunit embellished by Brennan's singular upgrade of a fantasy bromide and revitalizingly different viewpoint.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Lady Trent is the Jane Goodall of dragonkind, and I'm glad she's finally sharing her story with the world.” ―Jim C. Hines, author of Libriomancer“A Natural History of Dragons stands somewhere between Naomi Novik and Elizabeth Peters, but rock-solidly in its own world and on its own terms. Highly recommended.” ―Daniel Fox, author of Dragon in Chains

The premise of this book is pretty unique in my reading. The book is written, as the title will clue you in, as if it's the memoir of a female natural historian of what is essentially alternate Victorian England. It's a lot to take in but it works surprisingly well. Our memoirist, the eponymous Lady Trent, starts off the "memoir" introducing the reader to herself as a child and relating her early and lasting fascination with dragons and the research of dragons. From the asides and tone of the book you learn that Lady Trent is now an older lady who has become famous during her lifetime for her discoveries, which let her get away with a lot of things that a less-famous and younger lady would not be able to pull off.I did like that there were some original ideas in this iteration of dragons - it's always great to see something new brought to the table. With the scientific approach to dragons there was an emphasis on some things that usually get glossed over, like the physics of flight and commercial uses of things relating to dragons (trying to avoid getting adding spoilers). I also liked the quirk of dragon remains being extremely difficult to preserve and this presenting a real challenge for science. This book really appeals to a lot of things I like - fantasy, dragons, Victorian/Regency mannerisms (fantasy of manners), and a fun adventure. Although there are definitely conflicts and some violence in the book, because of it being told at a bit of a remove because of the "memoir" format it never feels very immediate, which for me worked well with the Victorian/Regency style feel. While this is not my new favorite book it was definitely an enjoyable read. This was the first book in a series and I'd be more than happy to read the sequels!

I love this book so whole-heartily that I came to buy it's sequel (A Tropic of Serpents) and stopped by to leave a review because I just want more people to enjoy the wonder of this book. First off let me tell you, Lady Trent is one of the greatest narrators I have ever had the pleasure of spending an entire book with. I love her. She is a well-developed and lovable woman with real fears, concerns, and desires. She understands her limitations, she just refuses to let them hold her back. Now on to the real review.First the cons:Honestly, I can't really think of anything I didn't like about this book. It was just that good, I literally loved every part of it.Now the pros:1. Lady Trent is a realistic strong woman, she doesn't pretend to be a man. She knows that she isn't. She is a woman and she has a woman's concerns and limitations. She doesn't put down other woman because they haven't achieved what she has and although she does find her friend Manda Lewis's obsession with sensation novels a bit frivolous, I never did get the feeling she actually hated Manda or really held it against her.2. This book is about dragons. Dragons man. And they don't disappoint, there are some amazing illustrations in the book of these majestic and awe-inspiring creatures supposedly drawn by Lady Trent herself. They really enhance the mood and help you to understand Lady Trent's desperate obsession with figuring out how they work.3. Jacob, Lady Trent's husband, is a humorous and likable secondary character. I loved him and well I won't say much more. You'll just have to read it.4. Dragma and Lady Trent's relationship is hilarious and develops quite nicely over the course of the book.5. The book is an easy and quick read and has a steady pace. It will suck you in and it will be hard to put down. But if you must you can and will you pick it up again it will be easy to get back into the world and the conflict of the story.Buy this book, you won't regret it! It will be one of the best purchase you will make this year. I promise!

Written in the style of a memoir, the voice of Lady Trent is alternately proper and full of mischief. Although on paper they may sound similar, this has a very different feel from Naomi Novik's Temeraire series as the first-person voice is distictly feminine."A Natural History of Dragons" chronicles Lady Trent's early years and her first expedition, leaving plenty of space for future volumes. Thankfully, the story has a satisfactory conclusion rather than leaving the readers with a cliff-hanger as some first-of-a-series books do. The characterizations of various characters other than Lady Trent (and perhaps her husband) are somewhat two-dimensional and the I felt the pacing of the plot was a bit rushed at the end compared to the rest of the book, but the saucy narrative makes the book hard to put down.As an added bonus, the hardcover copy of the book is absolutely beautiful. The deckled edges combined with text printed in chestnut brown ink immediately evokes the feeling of holding a handwritten journal. Also, Todd Lockwood is amazing as usual and the inner illustrations of various draconic species are stunning and lovingly detailed in an elegant sepia ink. The fanastic cover needs no words. This is definitely a book to purchase as a hard copy.

Amazon.com Review

Why do so many seemingly successful professionals hit the wall in middle age, and decide to either radically scale back their careers or set off in an entirely new direction? Clinical psychologist Steven Berglas, a specialist in success-induced burnout, believes it stems from the "self-handicapping behavior" that baby boomers are exhibiting in record numbers as they climb the corporate ladder and find they aren't happy with what results. Terming the phenomena Supernova Burnout, Berglas defines this workplace ennui as "the constrictive effects of being branded a 'success'" and offers some advice for the psychological distress that is an increasing consequence. In Reclaiming the Fire, he advances his arguments in a serious but accessible manner with references to cultural touch points like Mark Monsky's Looking Out for #1 and help from philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche. He analyzes "performance-inhibiting" behaviors ranging from substance abuse to abrupt career changes that he says developed from societal attitudes of the last half century, and suggests a few individual and organizational responses (including his 60 Minutes cure, which relies upon passion and intrinsic motivation to battle career malaise). While not everyone will agree with his assessments and prescribed cures, businesspeople who fit Berglas's description--and human resource managers who deal them--will likely find the material intriguing and potentially helpful. --Howard Rothman

From Publishers Weekly

Berglas, a management consultant and psychology instructor at UCLA and Harvard, traces burnout among attorneys, doctors, executives and others. For example, he points to Michael Jordan, who left basketball in 1993 because of "Supernova Burnout"; after extraordinary achievements, excessive attention made him fear failure, Berglas theorizes. Other cases of people trapped by success demonstrate burnout variations. Readers without their own professional guidance will wish Berglas discussed more solutions. Agent, Jill Kneerim. “Burnout” and “successful people” are not two words I had previously thought belonged in reference to the same people at the same point in time. When I first read the title of the book it really resonated with me and I was further convinced to read the book as I had heard great things about Dr. Berglas from the management teams of my companies who worked with him as their executive coach. I found the book to be intelligent, well-researched and innovative. The early chapters did a tremendous job outlining the root causes behind why otherwise successful people experienced mid-career burnout. And the latter chapters gave a very helpful framework to apply to one’s own personal situation to rejuvenate oneself and one’s career. I have implemented a lot of what I read in my own life and continue to refer Dr. Berglas to management teams where CEOs or other critical members suffer from similar dynamics. This is a must-read book – an outstanding return on the time invested.

I'm leaving Harvard with my second masters degree and I'm still searching for a purpose in life. A friend suggested I read Berglas' book, and while it it did not give me a formula for finding my "true calling," it was probably the only psychological tome I would call "gripping." I'm certain that I'll mull it over a while and be materially benefited for having absorbed all of what Berglas has to say. GREAT WORK!

I'm very glad that I bought this book because it has been very helpful to me and I look back at my copy often. I have not solved all of my particular burnout problems yet (no fault of the book's) but it helped me to identify my misery and malaise, how I got so deep into it (trying to please, trying to prove to my parents and myself that I'm worthy of living) and identifying the problems alone helped a great deal. Don't be put off by any claims that an academic or scientific tone is present or that any part of the book is difficult - this is a very helpful resource. You know you need this book when your most common feeling at work has become 1) wanting to throw everything out of a window, 2) wanting to throw a file at a coworker's head, or 3) answering all questions, comments or greetings with "F^%$ you" or "drop dead." Or when you start praying to be fired to just get the hell over with. When one or more of these is present, look to the burnout book for help....

Great for identifying causes of the problem and a description as to what the ultimate solution looks like. However, the book does very little in helping the reader identify those elements that would allow him or her to participate in the solution. A follow-up book would be great.

Short answer: Successful people overcome burnout by hiring Dr. Berglas. The author talks about several of his patients and how they did (or did not) overcome their problems. This is quite insightful, but the main message of this book seems to be a warning to people who believe that once they have achieved success everything will fall into place. According to Dr. Berglas, more often than not the opposite is true. After reading other reviews here, I expected more of an academic treatment of the topic, but it's far from that. For example, there is less than one references per page on average, and most of these aren't even to peer-reviewed papers and studies. And between the quotes from the ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, the tone tends to get a bit preachy.

Until reading this book, I never realized the limiting effects of success. If you're feeling entrapped or alone by your success, Reclaiming the Fire can help you find the spark that brings you back to life. Dr. Berglas' writing style pulls you in, makes you reflect, brings out buried emotions and will challenge your beliefs with real life examples backed by clinical evidence. Whether you're at your pinnacle or pursing it, this book is a must read for learning how to truly handle success.

I highly recommend this book! Dr. Berglas has a remarkable understanding of the human psyche -- he ( better than any other author I have read) completely and fully comprehends what drives/motivates us as well as the pitfalls in human nature and those present in our culture that can be defeating. I often felt as though he knew me personally and was speaking directly to me. Other friends of mine have made similar comments regarding Dr. Berglas. His insights are eye opening and make sense! He has an uncanny ability to grasp who we are and what we need. You will be glad you read this book!

This book was written before the 2007 financial meltdown and recession. Things are very different now, and I found many of the observations and advice to be of limited applicability or usefulness today.

I haven’t read many of fairy tale retellings, but those that I have read I’ve loved, and The Shadow Queen is no exception! In this retelling of Snow White and The Huntsman we follow Princess Lorelai in the role of Snow White. She’s no damsel in distress though, when she fled her wicked stepmother, she took to learning to fight and defend herself. The huntsman in this story is Prince Kol. He’s from a neighboring kingdom of dragon shifters and desperate to save his kingdom from the invading ogre army. So desperate he’d do anything, including making a deal with the evil queen. A deal that goes very wrong.I loved the chemistry between Lorelai and Kol. On their own they’re great, both strong and willing to do anything for their people. But together? *Swoon* Their relationship had a few plot twists that kept things from getting boring.I loved the magic in this book. The incantations were really interesting and the powers Lorelai and Queen Irina possessed were really cool. Especially Irina’s apples! And everything, including the rivers, trees, and earth, having a ‘heart’ for their magic to call upon for assistance. The authors choice to make Kol from a dragon shifter people was also especially awesome and as soon as I read that I knew I’d be hooked on the story. There was never a dull moment in this book and I was eager to keep reading (or listening to my Kindle read the book aloud to me at work!)I think those who love fairy tale retellings will appreciate this rendition. It had all of the staples of Snow White—evil witch, runaway princess, magic, apples, handsome prince, huntsman, hearts—but with the authors own unique magic twists. Plus there are dragon people. How cool is that?Go buy this book now and read it. Seriously.

If you haven’t heard of it, bloggers can receive a book for review and then others can buy the book cheaper than most places! I love it! And they sent me a beautiful copy of The Shadow Queen, a book I’ve been dying to read for months now.I should have posted the review days ago, but you all by now know about my move and all the packing I’ve been doing. Can we take a moment and enjoy this breathtaking cover from Redwine? That’s the one positive about physical books…you get to touch them and own them and share them on your Bookstagram! So beautiful. #coverlove.Anyway, let me tell you about the first book in the Ravenspire world (though with the black apple, you can imagine that it’s a retelling for Snow White right off the bat…and I love me a good retelling!):Lorelai Diederich, the daughter of the king, has had her world shattered. Her stepmother Irina, her mother’s sister, remarried after Lorelei’s mother died. Unfortunately for her, it was to her own father, the King of Ravenspire. Irina is a mardushka, someone who is in touch with magic, and as Lorelai grows up, she sees the twisted way Irina uses her powers to control the citizens, as well as her own father and brother. When she tries with her own magic to oust Irina and expose her for her dark ways, she loses her father and must take her younger brother and flee. She hides for the next ten years, planning with her brother Leo a way to retake the throne that rightfully belongs to her.Kol is a dragon shifter from the kingdom of Eldr. He finds himself facing ogres that are much more powerful than the dragon powers Kol and his people share. He needs help. He needs a mardushka. And the only mardushka he knows that it powerful enough is Queen Irina, a Queen he does not know is actually a usurper to the crown. And not a nice one. When Kol goes to Irina for help, she agrees with a blood oath: she will take care of the ogres…as long as he takes care of Lorelai. He will become her huntsman though he doesn’t want to hurt anyone. But he needs to say Eldr and its people. However, Lorelai is different than he expected: she’s strong and sure and the rightful heir of Ravenspire. He doesn’t want to hurt Lorelai. But soon he realizes he may not have a choice anymore.Lorelai must deal with loss, magic, and the crumbling decay of her land…as well as a dragon hunter who needs something she isn’t really willing to give him: her heart. But he may unintentionally already own it.And unfortunately for Lorelai, Irina is powerful, vengeful, and will do anything to keep what she believes is her rightful throne. At least she’s determined. Right? Is It Classroom-Appropriate?Yes, this is a perfect and fun example of a retelling done well. It’s similar but different enough from Snow White. It has a dynamic of good vs evil, but we also get to see Irina’s POV, and see into the heart and mind of an “evil” Queen…or is she just misunderstood? Lots of discussion with this: compare and contrast, the fantasy elements…and there’s plenty of action for the male readers who aren’t really fairy tale readers. We have Kol’s POV so we can see how this “huntsman” thinks. There is a lot of repetition, which pushes the point: when Kol is being controlled, he keeps repeating he is “fire, blood, and death.” This line is repeated and the emphasis is important. I can see bringing this into a fairy tale lesson plan. And I’m glad I have a copy I can use for classroom use!Age RangeLexile.com has a suggested age range of 11-13, but I find that very narrow. It’s practically suggesting The Shadow Queen is a MG book. I say yes, it could be used for that purpose and age level, but I also think it has literary merit through 17 (and up of course). The score is 920L, which means that there is no HL designation…and that also means that it’s not inappropriate for younger readers. The score is similar to Harry Potter’s Lexile score of 880L, and Lexile suggested an age range for Sorcerer’s Stone at 9-17! So my determination would be this is a good read for those as young as 11, and through and surpassing 17 years old.End Result:This book moves quickly though is over 300 pages. There is never a dull moment. I enjoyed it and cannot wait to read The Wish Granter, Redwine’s next book in the Ravenspire world. I see other books as well because thr map is quite detailed and there seems to be a whole world waiting to be addressed. So I can see the Ravenspire novels lasting awhile. And I’m excited to continue the journey with Redwine!I give The Shadow Queen ★★★★★. I would give it 4.5, but there are no half stars in the current rating Universe. I would rather round up on this one rather than down bc of the creative narrative and the wonderful plot just reminiscent of Snow White. Are you interested in owning a copy of The Shadow Queen now that you’ve read my review? Would you like to find a competitive price or find other books to chose from? Or maybe just want to check out SocialBookCo? Please visit! Thanks for reading and I hope you do decide to give this book a try! I’m not exactly generous with my five stars…this one, in my opinion, deserves to be read and cherished! So what you guys reading?Don’t forget to check out The Wish Granter, the next book in the Ravenspire series!****This one is based on Rumplestiltskin! Ahhhh!

If you follow my reading tastes you’ve probably noticed that fairy-tale retellings make up a large number of my read books and my TBR. Fairytales are archetypes that authors love to put their own spin on and as a literature major I guess I’ve always found that fascinating. The only thing about these retellings is that they’re never truly successful unless the author makes the story their own. CJ Redwine makes it her own.Redwine’s THE SHADOW QUEEN is clearly recognizable as the Snow White story. From the description of the main character to the villain and the huntsman, the book hits all notes for the tale. However it’s not that simple. From the world to the rules of magic and the rest of the characters, Redwine weaves her own mythology between the threads of the original tale so that one becomes indistinguishable from the other.I have a hard time picking a favorite character here. The MC, Lorelai, is Snow White in the way I wish she were told from the beginning. She has so much more agency than the original, which is what I noticed most about her from the beginning. Lorelai takes so much in her own hands, more than even a lot of YA heroines usually do.On the other hand her love interest is one of the most interesting characters I’ve read in a while. His dragon self, his two hearts, his backstory, it all makes for a character with so much to look at that he is more than JUST the main character’s love interest.Irina, our Villain is officially one of my favorite all time villains. She is ten kinds of evil with a backstory that doesn’t make her redeemable but in fact makes her a little bit worse. That said her backstory and her own love interest makes her a more 3 dimensional character rather than a cardboard cut out with VILLAIN painted across its forehead. The world building in this book is glorious. I love that everything in this world has a heart, that the magic appeals to that. It’s a very original way to make the world and magic system work together in an organic way. I would love to see more who the two work together when the world is the way it should be, with a rightful heir on the throne. This is one of my favorite books I’ve read this year and I’m so mad at myself for putting it off for so long. The characters are wonderfully written, the world crafted with love, and the writing style exactly what I expected and love from CJ.I HIGHLY recommend this book to fans of fairytale retellings, dragons, and fantasy.

I love this book. It was well written and really spoke to me. I really had a hard time putting it down, but when I did all I wanted to do was go for a run. Very few people have the talent and time to come close to these accomplishments, but Dean didn't start at the top. I enjoyed hearing about how he got into running and just kept going! I would recommend this book to runners and non-runners alike.

I hate running. Or at least I used to. And it had been a long time since I've run more than a few steps. The most I have ever run in my life was 3 miles. And that was when I participated in a 3k race. After reading a 1/3 of the book, around 11pm, I just went out and ran 4 miles. Two days later, after reading another 1/3 of the book, I went outside and ran 6 miles. Two days later, after finished the book, I went outside, and like Forest Gump, I ran 12 miles. At times, I had to walk, and there were a few times when I felt like I was crawling. The quote from the book, "When you can't run, walk. When you can't walk, crawl" continued to echo in my mind. The narration is very engaging and I enjoyed reading it.After this book, I read Born to Run by Chris McDougall. And while I did enjoy that book as well, Chris does take a few shots at Dean Karnazes. And so does Scott Jurek. There seems to be some resentment within the ultra community re: the amount of publicity and recognition that Dean has been receiving. I'm not aware of all that but all I know is that this book in itself, has inspired me to run again and that's all that matters.

Being a running enthusiast myself and having followed Dean Karnazes inspiring story of a total life change is a compelling and very interesting read! I love the journey that Dean has gone on as a human being and his story is certainly highlighted in the right way, self deprecating, self satisfying, self affirming, I really enjoyed the read and think Dean is a great inspiration to many. This book made me want to run again. I'm not an excellent runner in any way, shape or form, nor will I ever be. I will never have the endurance Dean has and has demonstrated; however, that's not what running is all about. If you get out and run, you ARE a runner and I love how Dean encourages his fans and simply the public in general about it all. Thanks for writing this Dean, it was a great read!

I read the first 200 pages in one sitting on a plane. Then my connecting flight got delayed, delayed, delayed, canceled. It was 2 AM in Atlanta, my new flight boarded at 6:30.No time for real sleep. What was I going to do?I grabbed my gear out of my bag and put in a dozen miles running the airport, afterward cleaning myself up like a hobo in the family bathroom, using hand soap and paper towels. Now it's 11 AM, I finished the book, I slept for 30 minutes or so a few hours ago and I feel like a badass. Thanks, Dean, for the inspiration.

Dean has a playful and compact writing style that gives the reader a mostly uncensored look as to what goes on in the mind of an Ultramarathon runner. This book is as much about chasing your passion, about discovering yourself and finding what really matters in your life as it is about how to survive 200 miles of running.Has it made me more interested in running Ultras? Not really, but it makes me appreciate those that do. They are a unique breed of runner with a unique running community. It makes me realize that the sacrifices I make for my own running endeavors are worth the effort because it gets me closer to becoming a better me.

I heard Dean Karnazes speak on the Spartan Cruise and was thoroughly entertained, and ordered the book as soon as we had internet service again. The book reads just like he speaks. This was an entertaining book. I didn't expect it to be a guide to running, or a historical book - the title is as tongue in cheek, and so is the book. It's an auto-biography, so it's a mix of being intentionally self-effacing while also claiming his victories.Do not read this book to learn how to run, to learn how to run further, or to learn about the history of ultramarathons. Read it because it's fun, and because, even if you're a crazy guy going through your own mid-life crisis through athletic endeavours, he'll probably make you feel relatively normal. (Take it from me). It's a light read - 269 pages in the paperback - and I read it faster than I ran my first marathon (and, not coincidentally, on the same day....)

I like this book! I really do. It's quite inspiring in fact. I read the 1-star reviews before writing this review and I must say, some are true to a certain extent. This book is not for everyone, so don't expect that you will benefit after reading this book. The content is basically a journey to his endeavors as a runner. He started running in high school, stopped for a number of years, and then started running again which all began at a midnight. Then that was when his, "running career" all blossomed.Overall, it's a good read. Don't expect any training, eating or workout plans but then, I didn't have any expectations so again, it's a good read. I'm starting to read his 50/50 in which Dean conquered 50 marathons in 50 states within 50 days.

This book was one of the best books I have ever read in my life. The author has a similar personality as mine though, so It read really easily and was probably why I enjoyed it as much. Read it as a motivational tool or just entertainment, I went from not exercising and 260 lb's to biking and running daily and now weigh 160. It really helped my bridge my goals but more importantly this is a story of a man changing his outlook in his life. I bought this and read it over the course of 3 days ( could not stop, had to force myself to put it down).
