This book contains everything you need to know about annuities, and then some. A lot of explanation and analysis goes into "special cases" (what is the tax treatment of a variable annuity purchased in a 401K but transferred out of a 401K and paying a different person than the actual owner of the annuity? OK, that is not really in the book, but you get the idea). There is way more here than an individual investor needs to know, and the book is targeted to financial advisors, so I guess that is reasonable.Anyway, this is a good resource if you really want to know a lot about annuities, but if it had been written with a couple of introductory chapters just reviewing what 99% of the investing public need to know, it would have been more useful (to me, at least).

FINALLY a book that explains what every financial professional, attorney and CPA should know (but doesn't) PRIOR to recommending the purchase of an annuity contract. "The Annuity Advisor" explains the finer points of annuity taxation during the owner's life and at death, trust owned contracts and the importance of a properly structured annuity contract. The chapters that relate to the functionality of an annuity contract and their correlation to the Internal Revenue Code alone are worth the price of the book. The authors are very factual and objective about the pros and cons of using an annuity. I work in an advanced planning department that supports an annuity business and this book finally made everything I had previously read "click". The comments made by another reviewer don't make any sense and make me wonder whether they actually read the book?? This book is a valuable resource for anyone in the industry who needs to understand how annuities can be used as financial planning tools (and not necessarily the panacea other "experts" claim them to be). This book is the only one out there that explains clearly the relationship between the annuity as an investment, contract structure and the Internal Revenue Code.

Highly Recommended, but even that doesn't do appropriate justice to this work. John Olsen and Michael Kitces, both of whom are nationally known and held in the highest regard by many top attorneys and planners, combine and conspire to directly address the tough issues regarding annuities, i.e., tax considerations, commissions and their effect on performance, complex contracts, pressure by insurance companies to sell in unsuitable situations, and more optional provisions than the mind can grasp. This book takes on these issues and sorts out the reality from the hype by honestly and objectively examining the good and bad of all major types of commercial annuities, from fixed to variable to equity indexed, as well as trust structures involving annuities and the tough section 72(s) issues. The book also includes such useful things as the actuarial tables for taxing annuities, exclusion ratio calculations, and the most pertinent Internal Revenue Code Sections. If this is not the quintessential commercial annuity desk book for planners, then I don't know what is or what ever will be. -- Jay Adkisson

Jocelyn Green has written another amazing novel filled with rich historical details and vivid imagery. It's a powerful story of one woman's resilience in the face of war, brokenness, and family strife. It does not follow the typical Christian fiction historical plot line. Be warned: there were not a lot of happy moments; however, there were a lot of REAL moments and I think those lessons and experiences are important to read every now and then. The ending will satisfy, just not in the way you might expect. 4.5/5 stars

Between Two Shores by Jocelyn Green is memorable, richly layered, and deeply affecting on a multitude of levels. Indeed Green’s vision in this story is nothing short of amazing. At the beginning the main characters felt rather opaque to me, which is exactly what made peeling back the layers of their story so rewarding in the end.Love and loss are evenly balanced in the lives of Catherine, Samuel, Bright Star, and Thankful. Choices each one made that appear at first to be hurtful to others are gradually revealed to have been the right ones. The necessary ones. The blessed ones.Profound, moving insights into the characters’ pasts, emotions, and motivations speak to universal human experience on a deep level. Green’s portrayal of place and time are also extraordinary. There were many points at which the story brought me to tears as I felt the characters’ struggles on a heart level. The ending was bittersweet but perfect, so satisfying that it will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a gift. Between Two Shores is a story you’ll remember long after you’ve read the last page.

This was a thrilling and rapturous novel; very moving and unpredictable. I liked that. I thought I knew how the story would end but was surprised at the outcome for each of the major characters in the story. A tremendous amount of research went into the writing of this novel. I learned so much from the reading. This is definitely one novel you will enjoy reading more than once!

I loved this book. It captivated me from the first page and was unexpected throughout. The story was heartwarming and raw at times, but warm and thought provoking at others. I highly recommend this book.

I really wanted to like this one. I have been a fan of this author since her debut and have read and loved almost all of her books. But sadly this one just wasn’t my cup of tea.The author’s ability to extensively research, once again shone through giving me a new look at a time in history that I really only knew from one side. Everything was vividly described from the Mohawk customs to the war.I really didn’t love the characters and the choices they made. There were hard circumstances thrown at them but I felt like things could have been handled better.There were some shocking twists and revelations throughout and at one point I almost hurled the book across the room. This isn’t your typical happily ever after read, things are real and rough. And while this book wasn’t one I personally loved, so many people have been gushing about it and I encourage you to check out more reviews!I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Time for another disclaimer — I do not have adequate words to describe just how amazing Between Two Worlds is. This book is nothing like what I thought it would be — it is BETTER! Between Two Worlds is a phenomenal Christian, feminist, historical novel that absolutely must be experienced. It does NOT follow the Historical Romance pattern. It beautifully and masterfully turns that pattern on its head.What makes a hero a hero? To me, a fictional hero is a male character who represents some of the best aspects of manhood. He is completely realistic and deals with actual flaws, but he is a man who behaves the best a man can. For me, a hero is a man who is strong in his moral/ethical views, he loves God with his whole heart, he knows he has flaws and wants to work on them to better himself, he pays attention to details and then acts on those details, he protects others even at cost to himself, and he genuinely cares. Regardless of the man’s physical features, these characteristics make the hero the handsomest of men. In Between Two Shores, the hero seems to be Samuel Crane. He is handsome, he has a goal he needs to meet, and he does seem to care about others. And, at the beginning, it appears that Samuel is the heroine’s love interest. I will admit though that Samuel frustrated me hard! Meeting his goal, no matter the cost to anyone, is Samuel’s main prerogative. As I was reading, I kept waiting for Samuel to be that true hero, but I never felt he reaches this status. In fact, he is awfully selfish and self-focused. Then I was stumped. What is Green doing in this book, and what is she saying about heroes? And, who is the hero of this story?Then, it dawned on me! Catherine is both hero and heroine in this fabulous story. Catherine is one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever read. She is beautiful, intelligent, resilient, and strong. Catherine is the kind of strong that is both physical and mental, but she is also incredibly vulnerable. There are several moments in this novel that broke me, and my mom-heart desperately wanted to hug Catherine hard and fix all the broken things for her. Have tissue when you read this book. But I digress … back to my hero topic. Catherine is literally everything I defined in the paragraph above. She has a strong code of ethics, she loves God and tries to follow His path for her even when she is not sure about herself or God, she pays attention to details and then acts accordingly, and she genuinely cares about the lives of others (sometimes to her detriment, but isn’t that what we women do?). I love that Catherine is the hero, but what is Green trying to teach us readers through this fact? Here’s the BEST part of this book! Many times in this story, it’s just Catherine and God. There is no one else to help her or save her. I believe this is the number one goal of this fabulous book: with God, we women are the heroes in our own stories. No woman needs a man, BUT we all need God. With God by our side we can truly accomplish ANYTHING, even being the women our men need! I cannot tell you how refreshing it was for me to read a book that gives women back their true power. And the best part, it’s not at the cost of men. Too many “feminists” today want to hurt men. This novel celebrates women. It does not tear men down.I once heard an American Lit professor say, “America was founded on the backs of women, slaves, and indigenous peoples.” This statement has stuck with me ever since, and I believe it is true for pretty much every community and country on this earth, especially Montreal in 1759. The sheer amount of back-breaking work Green illustrates women doing in order to provide for their families and survive the harsh realities of life during this time is exceptionally eye opening. Everything was put on the shoulders of women, and this workload seems to triple with war occurring. I was exhausted going through a single day with Catherine, and then subsequently grateful that my day is nothing like hers. What I really love in Between Two Shores is the picture of female solidarity and strength. Knowing that there is another woman to count on for physical, emotional, and mental help means being able to get through really hard events. Watching Bright Star, Thankful, and Catherine support one another in various and unique ways is beautiful. It made me even more grateful for my personal female friends. Each one of my dear friends has a unique strength, intelligence, and beauty that I know I can draw from through good times, bad times, and in-between times. Between Two Shores made me realize how blessed I am in my female relationships.I legitimately could go on and on for days talking about this novel. I haven’t even brought up Joseph Many Feathers — arguably the BEST male character in this beautiful novel. But, I am so giddy about this book I know I am bound to spoil something. So, I will just add that I highly (times infinity) recommend this FANTASTIC novel. I believe Between Two Shores is a #MustRead for 2019 and every other year after that. Purchase a copy of this stellar novel today. About the Author

Christine A. Courtois, PhD, ABPP, a board-certified counseling psychologist, is retired from private practice in Washington, DC, and is a consultant/trainer on topics on trauma psychology and treatment. She cofounded and then served for 16 years as Clinical and Training Director of The CENTER: Posttraumatic Disorders Program, in Washington, DC. Dr. Courtois was chair of the Clinical Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Adults for the American Psychological Association (APA), released in 2017, and for guidelines on the treatment of complex trauma for several professional organizations. She has published a number of books (four of them coedited or coauthored with Julian Ford) and numerous book chapters and articles on trauma-related topics. Dr. Courtois is past president of APA Division 56 (Trauma Psychology) and past founding Associate Editor of the Division's journal, Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. She served two terms on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). She has received the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Independent Practice from the APA, the Sarah Haley Award for Clinical Excellence from ISTSS, and, most recently, the Award for Distinguished Service and Contributions to the Profession of Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology.Julian D. Ford, PhD, a clinical psychologist, is Professor of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Law at the University of Connecticut, where he is also Director of the Center for Trauma Recovery and Juvenile Justice. He has served on the Steering Committee of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, as Associate Editor of the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation and the European Journal of Psychotraumatology, as Co-Chair of the Presidential Task Force on Child Trauma for APA Division 56, and as a board member and Vice President of ISTSS, and has published several other books on trauma-related topics. Dr. Ford developed and conducts research on the Trauma Affect Regulation: Guide for Education and Therapy (TARGET) psychosocial intervention for adolescents, adults, and families. Dr. Ford and Dr. Courtois were awarded the Print Media Award from ISSTD for this volume.

As a psychotherapist, I've struggled to treat various forms of Complex PTSD, in children & adults, for over 20 years, including borderline personality disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and current forms of multi-deployment Combat PTSD.This recent collection of 20 articles from over 30 leading scholars, researchers and clinicians in the field will doubtless be the standard reference for Complex PTSD for many years. If you want to know more about how to understand, diagnose and treat Complex PTSD, START HERE! The articles are divided into three sections: overview, individual treatment approaches and strategies and - what a relief! - systemic treatment approaches and strategies. I say, "What a relief!", as often in reviews of treatment approaches, systemic approaches are given short shrift. And in my experience, systemic approaches are often VERY much needed, in some cases indispensible, for healing Complex PTSD, especially with children & teens, and especially with major problems with attachment - one sadly common hallmark of Complex PTSD. Each article has an extensive bibliography for those who want to know more.The "Overview" section covers a satisfyingly large number of topics, including current approaches to understanding & defining Complex PTSD, overviews on best Practices with children & teens and with adults, cultural issues, risk management/treatment alliance and compassion fatigue/vicarious traumatizing. I want to compliment the editors for this last article. Few areas of psychotherapy are more prone to therapist burnout via PTSD by association than Complex PTSD. I strongly recommend that all clinicians who work significantly in this area become competent in assessing their own risks to compassion fatigue and take regular steps to manage this.The "Individual Treatment Approaches and Strategies" section is refreshingly clear of biases toward one school. In addition to the standard Cognitive/Behavioral models, they also include articles on Experiential and Emotion-Focused Models, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and - useful for clinicians to know --Pharmacotherapy. Each article presents an initial summary, the model's basic assumptions/theory, reviews the research, discusses specific clinical applications and presents a case example and/or transcript. While not lengthy, they provide enough information for clinicians to decide whether to pursue an approach further.The "Systemic Treatment Approaches and Strategies" section includes Richard Schwartz's "Internal Family Systems" as well as traditional multi-person "systems" treatments - Couple Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Group Therapy. As with the individual treatment section, each section includes overview, basic assumptions, review of research, clinical applications and case example/transcript. Both the "Internal Family Systems" and the "Couple Therapy" articles are written by the field's giants - Schwartz and Susan Johnson & Christine Courtois. These two articles are gems for a moderate introduction. I found the family section more disappointing - particularly since so little has been "overviewed" in this field. But then this could be because my giants - Daniel Hughes (see Attachment-Focused Family Therapy and Building the Bonds of Attachment: Awakening Love in Deeply Troubled Children) and Heather Forbes & B. Bryan Post (See Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control: A Love-Based Approach to Helping Attachment-Challenged Children With Severe Behaviors) - weren't even referenced. Nor did they reference the Grand Dame of RAD family approaches, albeit less therapy than parenting -- Nancy Thomas. (Her 2nd ed. of "When Love Is Not Enough: A Guide to Parenting Children with RAD" is a strong improvement, correcting parts in the 1st ed. which could be misinterpreted and lead families to become punishing.)I have three complaints, which are serious, but which don't take away the true importance of this collection. First is that by emphasizing treatments ONLY, they mention, but do not emphasize as much as, in my experience, as is desperately needed, the difficult relationship-building aspects. In my experience, building specific Complex-PTSD relationships is more important than particular treatment approaches. For information about building relationships, and about more on accessing client strengths & feedback, I recommend Psychotherapy Relationships that Work: Therapist Contributions and Responsiveness to Patients and The Heart and Soul of Change: Delivering What Works in Therapy (Be sure to get the 2nd ed., 2010!).Second is that large areas of Complex PTSD are neglected or even completely ignored. For example, as someone who treats Combat PTSD with soldiers (and their families) who've experienced three and four deployments of a year or more, I'm finding that the worse the deployment, and more deployments appear to be creating symptom clusters highly typical of Complex PTSD. Another area: as someone who treats individuals with Asperger's/High Functioning Autism, I find that many AS/HFA teens, especially, because of problems they face - socially, educationally, vocationally, in managing feelings, cognitively - also appear to develop symptoms quite similar to the Complex PTSD cluster.Third is that I strongly wish that issues of addiction & various forms of self-medicating were more integrated into the Complex PTSD concept and into the treatment approaches. I find addictions/self-medicating distressingly common in Complex PTSD. And when present, addictions/self-medicating greatly complicates building treatment alliances and other relationships, the resources available to clients and finding approaches which integrate this into general Complex PTSD treatment.Again, though, I want to emphasize: if you work in this field, I'd recommend buying this book. Its rampant pluralism of approaches is just what Complex PTSD needs. Here, like nowhere else in my clinical experience, one size does NOT fit all. Not only are different treatment approaches needed, commonly different modalities, such as family & group, are also needed. Therefore, knowing several approaches helps the vital process of individualizing treatments.We can never know enough treatments for helping these people & their families. And "Treating Complex Traumatic Stress Disorders" can help us all find more approaches that can help us help more clients.

I am not a practitioner, but a well-educated, research-oriented consumer. This is a really thorough and comprehensive series of reviews of current treatment practices in the trauma field. Each chapter is a stand-alone review on a particular focus, and chapters are grouped together when they concern similar treatment modalities. It's quite a bit to wade through in a sitting, but if the reader were not interested in all types and areas of treatment, he/she could read just the chapters of interest. The summaries are generally quite good, with good background material, and lots of references for the ambitious to find more to read on the topic. I appreciated that they summarize research in the field, and acknowledge when good research studies are lacking. I'm sure a practitioner would take a great deal more out of this book, but even non-practitioners with an interest in the material will benefit from this excellent book. Overall, it is well written and interesting to read.

This is an excellent summary of current thinking about Complex PTSD edited by experts in the field, after they had interviewed hundreds of Complex PTSD clients and their therapists. I was sold when they started by stating that the relationship between therapist and client is more important than any technique used. Everybody who works with Complex PTSD survivors should read this book.

I bought this book for a master's level social work class. It's the first textbook I've ever read cover to cover.The first half gives in depth trauma theory, including the neurological components, multicultural treatment, and trauma theory development. This will either present you with new and necessary ideas, or a solid reminder of the foundation of trauma work. The second half consists of several chapters that outline specific types of trauma treatments, including transcripts from real therapy sessions. As a student, I appreciated reading about the variety of treatment methods that I can later pursue in post-grad training. I also think it would be good to know what other people are doing, even if I opt not to.One warning, this book is specifically catered to complex traumatic stress disorder, not PTSD. Although, it does point out the connections and similarities.

Very through on the topic, but for professionals. A little heard to read for the lay person.

This is an excellent book for a college student or anyone with a sincere interest in understanding and/or treating the results of childhood abuse, neglect and trauma. This book was recommended, but not required, for a trauma treatment class that I am taking. I am very glad that I purchased it. It provides a look into the mind and thinking patterns of the repeatedly traumatized child and the very real results of that traumatization in adults and how it impacts daily life.
