Overall, the content of the book is fine, but it is not written well. The explanation of concepts and methods is limited. It is evident that different authors handled different section resulting in inconsistencies and disconnects between chapters. The authors cover a lot of material, but at very little depth. The content in several sections is dated and could use updating. I read the book in order to review the topic, but I really had to force myself to finish the text.

This book is somewhat convoluted in its descriptions. While it is very thorough in the material, it's practice problems do not match the example problems at all and there are not solutions in the back which makes things even more difficult.

I think that Fast Break by Mike Lupica is a very fascinating book. Jayson the main character is a great teammate, an aggressive player, and has to persevere through hard times. This book is a very suspenseful book and shows how lucky some of us are. This story takes place in North Carolina. He starts off living on his own trying to not get picked up by Child Protective Services but blows his cover. So he gets taken to a nicer part of town with a foster family. Now trying to make the basketball playoffs comes a challenge with his new team.My first reason is that he is a great teammate. One way to show this is, â€œHe could have kept it for an easy bucket but passed instead,â€™â€™pg 88. This shows he is a great teammate because he could have kept it but decided to pass. Another piece of evidence is, â€œ With fists flying through the air Jayson tries an attempt at stopping it,â€ This shows he is a good teammate because he tried to stop a fight to save his friends. And that is two reasons why he is a good teammate.My second reason is that he is an aggressive player. Like on pg 213 it says, â€œJayson was trying to keep his voice low even though he was spitting mad,â€pg 63. This shows he is an aggressive player because he wants to just yell. Also in the story it says, â€œHe was playing mad like always,â€ This shows that he is an aggressive player because he was playing like he has something to prove. And those are my two reasons that he is an aggressive player. And my last reason that it is a fascinating book is that Jayson has to persevere through tough times. In the book it says â€œWith his mom gone, Jayson knew it wouldn't be long before Richie left him too,â€pg 11. This shows that he had to persevere even without anyone to take care of him. My second piece of evidence is â€œ Why didn't you tell me they were black?,â€ (his foster parents). This shows that he had to persevere because he got nervous around black people. There are some examples to show how he had to persevere. All in all, we can learn that if you just keep going at it you will eventually get it. I would read Fast Break over and over because it is so unpredictable! I rate this 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked the story. I recommend it 200%. It is about a boy named Jayson who's mother dies and he is forced to live with a family who he struggles with at first, but then starts clicking with them. He plays for the school team and leads them far. I wish the author could make the story more about his life away from b-ball.

great for teens as well as adult - life lessons - great for team building .If you love bb its an entertaining easy read full of wisdom .

This book has so much depth and perception of a kid in middle school It speaks to a kid like me who has played basketball had trouble with girls and all of that stuff except for the parent thing but I would 100% recommend this book

This book is great for middle-teens, young men, and even helpful to older men. Would be excellent for premarital counseling. It is not a silver bullet, nor does it claim to be. However, there is a lot of very helpful information and advice for pastors and counselors, perhaps some of the best I've read in all my years of ministry. You will get your money's worth if you are seeking help for you or someone else. It is totally bible-based, but even if you don't believe in God, you will find help.

This is a really good book about why pornography/lust/masturbation is a sin. It gives practical tips on how to overcome the struggle as well as Biblical theology behind why these things are so wrong. It's also a really short read, which is always a plus. It could probably be a little bit more practical, but I don't think that was the purpose of the book. Not sure if I'd recommend it for JH or HS students, but it probably wouldn't hurt... For sure great for those in college and beyond.

I have read a few books on this subject and have taken from each of them. I prefer these types of books when there are written by an author who is familiar with the subject as opposed to someone who has not suffered from this vice. This was well written and had thoughtful questions for the reader. There was no false hope or hype built into this book as I have read in others. What I mean by that is that the author does not portent to have the magic bullet to solve this problem but rather helps you see where the failings in this lifestyle are and how to recognize and avoid some common signs and trappings of the habit. I read the Kindle edition so I don't know how many pages it was but it was a quick read.

I'm a pastor, and I've used this book as a form of first aid for men dealing with pornography addiction. This book is a good tool for that purpose. Of course, there is no magic bullet for this problem, but beginning to see sexuality from a healthy perspective is a great starting point for recovery. I'm thankful Challies has put this together!

Tim gets right to the point in this short book, but it is filled with excellent reasons to pursue purity.Pornography, masturbation, and lost are not victimless crimes. They hurt the viewer, the man's relationships with other women, especially his wife, and the women who pose for the pictures. Tim helps expose how horrifying this cluster of sins is, but he goes on to show how wonderful, delightful, and joyful sex is in the marriage relationship.Tim answered a question I had wondered for many years: why did God give men such a strong sex drive? Tim answers that God wants the man to be motivated to pursue his wife, to lovingly romance her, and to have sex with her often. God wants the husband and wife to find intimate union often. The sex drive is not the problem, it is the illegitimate ways men seek to fulfill that urge.I heartily recommend this book to every man.

This book should be read by every man no matter what his religious persuasion. Our responsibility to our wives, family, and especially to our Creator is highlighted and explained. The insidious nature of porn on our very psyche is seldom considered when the urge to be involved with it takes over. The scars of indulgence in this degrading medium are long-lasting and impossible to heal without God's grace and forgiveness. There is hope though. The promise of forgiveness and healing are there for the asking.

This is an excellent resource for men who are in any stage of battling porn. My only criticism is that it seems to be geared more toward married men -- or rather, I should say, it focuses mostly on marriage and the effects looking at porn will have on the marriage relationship. Which is all true, but I wish he had focused more on fighting porn just because you are pursuing Christ-likeness. But even as a single guy, I found this book extremely helpful.

Excellent book which deals honestly with the plight of pornography. Lots of scripture which will help you remedy against the lustful schemes of the devil.I recommend this book to ANYBODY who has ever even watched porn.

I was stoked when I saw this book on NetGalley, a feminist book about how important female friendships are? It was right up my alley. Unfortunately, I ended up being somewhat disappointed by the content. Overall, the book is well-written and makes a lot of important points. But these points are surrounded by a meandering narrative that ultimately seemed without purpose.There were also a couple of points made that I didnâ€™t agree with. First and foremost was the idea that a woman could not have a man as a best friend, â€œit just doesnâ€™t work that way.â€ I disagree wholeheartedly. While I see where the author is coming from, I have several male best friends who Iâ€™m just as close to as my non-male best friends. Thereâ€™s nothing I donâ€™t feel comfortable sharing with them, and while they may not have gone through all the same experiences as me, theyâ€™re still my best friends.The majority of the book is anecdotal, with references to pop culture. Thereâ€™s a bit of historical research mixed in and very little, if any, current research. Itâ€™s the author talking about her friendships with women, and interviewing other women about their friendships. All these stories seem to come from a very limited subset of women â€” upper-middle class straight women. At least, that was the vibe I got. I didnâ€™t mark down details about every single woman she interviewed, but this seemed to be the pattern I saw.There were a few other things that gave me some serious â€œyikesâ€ vibes. The author made jokes about strokes, and put in jokes about stalking quotes from an interviewee. There was also one line that really irritated me. The author is talking about a pair of best friends, one straight and one gay. She shared that the friends would go to gay bars together, which is fine, but that â€œSusanna liked being the only straight girl.â€ Being queer myself, Iâ€™m pretty sick of straight women co-opting gay spaces as their own and I found this inclusion completely unnecessary.Additionally, the author shared that she didnâ€™t really care about feminism at all until Trump was elected. I think this goes to show the kind of privilege she has lived with, and that she isnâ€™t really qualified to speak for women at large. I was surprised that she even admitted to this, but I think that just means that she doesnâ€™t see any issue with it.I will note again that I am reading an unfinished copy, so it would be interesting to know if any of these things were left out of the final copy.Overall, Text Me When You Get Home was an enjoyable read. It was nice reading about relationships between women, but I didnâ€™t feel like I was learning anything. I would be interested in seeing a book written about relationships between women that goes more in depth than this one, and that discusses women from different backgrounds. I wonâ€™t tell anyone not to read this book, but I think itâ€™s good to go into it not expecting it to be a gamechanger.

Boy did I hate this book. It's like a mean girl wrote about how great she is and then got someone to publish it. Absolute garbarge. Not interesting, poorly written, dreary read.

For a book about female friendships it sure does spend a ridiculous amount of time talking about men. I was looking for a heartwarming pick-me-up while I'm feeling far away from all my closest friends but instead I found 100+ pages of how so many early friendships are super fake and then a bunch of gush about how adult friends are the bestest thing ever with no nuanced look at the complexities that make these relationships as special as they are. I legitimately started to question if my friendship experiences were somehow super rare since I've had close female friends since middle school and none of those friendships have ever resembled the "normal," "typically" relationships she describes.The introduction had potential, it went down hill from there.

The timing couldnâ€™t be better for this book to be written. Although it doesnâ€™t provide you with new revelations, per se, itâ€™s fun as a woman to read a collection of facts and anecdotes that match your experiences and support a fact you already know: that your girlfriends are your rock and a part of your family. I love how this book challenges the supposition that women are â€œcattyâ€ and takes a hard look at the bias that pervades so many female stereotypes. I read this for an all-female book club and we rejoiced thoroughly in its â€œfeel goodâ€ message and all of us walked away from this novel texting our BFFs around the world to let them know we love them, need them, and canâ€™t live without them!

Reading this story of different friend, friend groups makes me appreciate and love every one of my girlfriends to tell them how smart, fun, inspiring they are to me. Thank you, Kayleen, for writing this book and sharing it with the world!

In searching Prolog courses on-line, this book is referenced as #1 over and over again. So far I have read about 1/2 the book. It does not disappoint. I find Prolog a hard language to get proficency. The "declarative style" of programming is very different from the other 3 paradigms of programming. (The other three are procedural, object oriented, and functional. As a prerequisite to this book I would suggest "The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs." ) This book gives lots of examples and exposition to get both a logical and intuitive feel of problem solving in Prolog. I am afraid it make take more than one reading to understand Prolog.

Having just read a book on automated reasoning which covered topics in logic, such as unification and resolution, I was very pleased with the prolog programming language, in that it takes concepts from logic, and uses them in ways that can be applied to a number of interesting areas of AI, such as NLP, planning, and expert systems. I thought Bratko succeeded in making this connection with logic, without burdening the reader with notation and concepts that are really not needed for writing or understanding prolog programs.The book also worked for me on the level of providing a good introduction to the syntax and sematics of the language. The first 200 pages succeed to this end.Finally, the last 13 chapters can be summarized as representing an introduction to AI from a prolog perspective. On the positive side, he shows how to apply prolog to all of the modern, main streams of AI study. However, on the negative, the slant towards prolog in these chapters tends to oversimplify these disciplines.My impression of the language is that it seems good as a prototying language, since it is declarative in nature, but from my experimentation (using SWI Prolog) I think I could write better implementations using c or java.In closing, Bratko's book represents a very good place to start learning prolog and the world of AI.

This is an excellent book on Prolog *and* on AI.For example, chapter 19 is an introduction to inductive learning in first-order logic, an advanced topic rarely found in introductory books. The example program HYPER is a very powerful learner as compared to other "propositional" machine learning methods such as decision trees, neural networks, or support vector machines. I have ported HYPER to Lisp and am still exploring it.Prolog is not a very popular language nowadays, but basic knowledge of it is still essential to learning logic-based AI.

Professor Bratko has done a tremendous job of putting all the fundamental concepts of Prolog and its applications in various areas of AI. Although this book is focused on Prolog, the concepts that he has discussed are so fundamental that they can be implemented in other languages like Java as well.I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn Prolog. I would also recommend the readers to use a Prolog system to work out the examples and exercises as s/he goes through every chapter. A DEC10 Prolog system (like SICStus Prolog) would probably be the best companion for this book.

Though I have just started this book, I can tell that it is going to be amazing. I have been trying to find a good introduction to Prolog for some time now, and this is exactly what I had been looking for. Clear presentation, beautiful and complete editing work, easy to understand, and comprehensive.If you do want to use this book for A.I. though, and you either already understand Prolog or would rather work in lisp/python/etc. this book may be a bit much for you, either in terms of redundancy or over-saturation. However, if you can manage to slug through it (it is rather huge at 678 pgs), I think that anyone interested in A.I. or Prolog could find something helpful in this book.Overall, I am excited to work through this book, and I will probably update my review once I have done so.

I have wanted a copy of this for a long time, but at $40 felt it was a bit too much for me. Besides, there were only a few songs that I needed. Of all the fake books I've seen, this one reproduces the rhythmically complex music most accurately, and is set up as piano score with instrumental cues.

Easy to read layout (of course) and a boatload of Latin tunes I haven't found elsewhere.

I have purchased this calendar in the past and it itself is a great product. My only complaint is delivery. When I placed my order from the beginning of January, I knew it wasn't going to be delivered until mid-February (I was willing to be patient since I really liked this calendar and I know that living in Hawaii, deliveries can be lengthy). Then I received notice that delivery was further delayed to sometime mid-March, which I felt was unacceptable. Up to 3 months would've passed before I received this calendar for a 'full price' calendar is ridiculous.

I order these calendars every year for past 7 years. They never disappoint

About the Author

Richard J. Evans was born in London and educated at Oxford University. He has taught at Columbia University and Birkbeck, University of London, and since 2014 has been the Regius Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Cambridge. His many publications include an acclaimed three-volume history of the Third Reich and a recent collection of essays, The Third Reich in History and Memory. A Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Literature, he is a past winner of the Wolfson History Prize, and was twice a History Honoree at the Los Angeles Times Book Awards. In 2012 he was appointed Knight Bachelor in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List, for services to scholarship.

I purchased this book on the basis of newspaper reviews and the author's considerable reputation as an historian. I expected a readable history of the main currents in politics, society and the economy in Europe over the century covered. The book does not disappoint. But the author over reaches by also trying to cover the major developments in art, music, literature and the frontiers of science. That treatment is too often superficial and not related to the book's main focus. His treatment often comes off as no more than name dropping. Do we need to know that the French Symbolists and Impressionist paintings may have influenced the music of Debussy and Ravel? To show the spread of science, on pages 497 to 498 Evans rattles off a list of scientists and their achievements, but without drawing connections to their work or the impact on the further advancement of science. For example, the significance of the work of the Curries, Rontgen and Rutherford (mentioned) and Max Planck (not mentioned) ushered in the exploration of the atom, which would dominate the physical sciences in the 20th century. The book is organized into sections and subsections in which Evans explores various themes. Information and facts can come from all directions to prove a generalization. That can sometimes be interesting, but also disconcerting. In discussing the changing concept of modern time Evans brings in racing tea clippers, the sinking of the Titanic, the depiction of time and motion in early 20th century paintings, experiments in the French cinema and Einstein's theory of special relativity (pages 393-394). The facts don't always integrate and the generalizations don't entirely convince. The narration is aided by 20 special maps and a lovely midsection of glossy color reproductions of art related to historical events. There is a 10 page guide to further reading. The book is directed at the general reader, so there are no scholarly notes. Even with its shortcomings and excesses, that only take up only a small part of the book, Evans has written a fascinating, readable narrative history of the European century before it plunged into world war.

This is the way I prefer to read history. Not limited to politics and wars, important as these might be, but also covering daily life, technology and culture. Possibly more scholarly than I would ideally have liked it (no character, no matter how minor, is introduced without his / her dates of birth and death), but extremely well written and as much of a page turner as a fine scholarly book can be.

The distinguished Oxford Historian Richard Evans has given us a kaleidoscopic view of European civilization during the century it came to dominate the globe. A reader will learn a lot by going through this very long book (848 pages in the print edition without footnotes or endnotes.) In my opinion too long for the average lay reader. Evans offers us a bottom-up socio-political history where the focus is more on the average citizen and culture than the political elite.In essence Evans discusses how Europe came to terms with the political earthquakes brought about by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars and the industrial revolution. In 1815 the so called Concert of Europe is brought into being by Metternich as a conservative reaction to the French Revolution. That framework largely keeps the peace until 1848. Nevertheless the ideas of the French Revolution bubble up and gradually work to democratize European society as the franchise is extended to more and more people. He highlights the conflict between the liberal reformers in the bourgeoisie and their more democratic counterparts whose visions extend to feminism and socialism.Along the way nationalism becomes the most powerful force in Europe as Italy and Germany unify and the minorities within the decaying Austrian and Ottoman Empires revolt. It is those revolts that light the match that starts World War I.Nationalism also becomes the motivating force in the establishment of European colonial empires in Asia and Africa. Territory abroad yielded political prestige home. The power of nationalism proves itself in 1914 when the previously anti-war socialist parties all vote for war credits in their respective nations.All told The Pursuit of Power is well worth the read, but it will take a patient lay reader to get through it all.

This book is not a new synthesis by any means, in fact there aren't even any source notes on the body of the text, but it is a very solid and well written survey of the political, cultural and social history of Europe from the Congress of Vienna to the outbreak of WW1. If all you are interested in is political history this will not be for you, as only about 1/3 of the book is pure political history. Evans gives equal time to the lives of the "normal people" and the events that had deep influence on them. If you are familiar with Evans' previous works on European history than you know that the book will be readable despite its considerable length.

This was a good book about what was to me the missing century between Napeleon and the Grear War. It else really helped me understand the roots of modern liberalism and progressive politics. It really helps explain how the world was leading to Great War.

I teach 20th Century American History, so I decided to read Richard Evan's mighty tome regarding 19th Century Europe and I am very glad I did. Every trial and tribulation America has suffered through in the 20th Century happened to Europe in their 19th. The effects of stupidity, inventions, politics, wars, banking, legal changes, agriculture, military modernization, industrialization, transportation/infrastructure, foreign policy, health systems, environmental changes, diversity, rise of political parties, economics, education and the rise of the university, information via print, development of energy sources, and the rise of the everyman theory in national leadership...it is all in Evan's well-documented, well-written masterpiece.This is a must read for an historian.
