Review
“A thorough and useful history of the legal and political status of atheists in America.†- Casey Cep, The New Yorker“This compact and thorough work is a perfect introduction to atheism in America.†- Booklist“An impassioned review of the demands of a little-considered minority.†- Kirkus Reviews“This accessible and sincere book usefully makes explicit often-unspoken currents in American political life.†- Publishers Weekly“This work provides important historical insights into a contentious contemporary issue. Highly recommended for readers interested in history, law, and political science, as well as those seeking positive approaches to expanding religious liberty.†- Library Journal“An illuminating read on an increasingly important aspect of American history and politics. With more Americans eschewing religion, such a book is both timely and warranted.†- Phil Zuckerman, author of Living the Secular Life“Godless Citizens in a Godly Republic provides exactly what we need more of from historians but so rarely get: accessible, well-written prose combined with scholarly discipline in the service of a contemporary issue badly in need of light rather than heat.†- Eric Alterman, author of Inequality and One City“R. Laurence Moore and Isaac Kramnick trace the often-shocking history of atheism in America. In a nation dedicated to the separation of church and state, we have seen furious battles over compulsory school prayer, discrimination against nonbelievers, and continuing efforts to declare this to be ‘a Christian nation.’ Moore and Kramnick bring to life a continuing struggle to make this nation what the Founders intended it to be.†- Geoffrey R. Stone, author of Sex and the Constitution“As American demographics trend increasingly secular, religious conservatives are trying harder than ever to define the nation’s law and politics in their terms. Meanwhile, seeing secularism under attack, nonbelievers are standing up and speaking out as never before. Godless Citizens in a Godly Republic provides unique and valuable insight into these culture wars.†- David Niose, author of Nonbeliever Nation: The Rise of Secular Americans

This is a well written, well researched look a the past and present history of atheism in America. I sincerely appreciate the author's insights about the ethics, reason, and respectful engagement that should (but hasn't) been a routine part of the discourse between the faithful and the freethinkers. It made for some moments when you have to simply had to pause and think about what is the best way forward for our society and mankind as a whole. I do wish there was a significant sociological study of what makes people freethinkers, if for nothing more than to find a way to herd the cats, as it were, and make the secular slice of society a more powerful, respected part of the American political scene. Perhaps this book will help make that a reality. I found this book a much easier read than Susan Jacoby's "The Age of American Unreason", with much more focus on the court cases that define the legal position of freethinkers.
I found this book uniquely enlightening in a time when Americans are being asked more and more to consider the impact religiosity has on our public life. Moore and Kramnick tackle this frequently dense and complex subject using language that is accessable and even fun to read, keeping my interest. I walked away from my reading experience feeling much more informed about the history of atheism in America, with a better understanding of how it impacts our public life even today. A book that encourages critical thinking and reflection-I highly recommend it to all curious readers!
Moore and Kramnick have written a wonderfully accessible history book for and about nonbelievers. It describes the ridiculous prejudice many Christians have against atheists, agnostics, nonbelievers, freethinkers...what have you, and how the faulty reasoning of powerful leaders misinform the public about why nonbelievers reject religion. It takes the reader through court battles and details the slowly growing cultural acceptance of nonbelief in America. For a person with an inquiring and open mind it must be read.
The book has no chapter abstracts, no conclusions, no graphs, no tables, no indication of what the authors consider critical at the end of each chapter. Pretty reader unfriendly. Jumping to the last chapter they are sympathetic to Sikhs and muslims. You cannot do that and be atheist. You only have one tush. Where are you going to sit? Islam is an intolerant, aggressive, sexist political tribe. We can revisit that when it is no longer associated with any government. Until then resistance is reasonable. There is a long chapter on the supreme court. That may be important from a historical standpoint but the justices opinions have little philosophical weight.Yes to civility. But until the major religions break the incestuous tie with government they need no sympathy.Yes the world can be hard, take solice where you can. Most of those suffering will not be reading this book so the imaginary nature of gods and goddesses, heaven and hell will not be shocking. Go to the next level without fear. So some interesting historical musings but not quite godless enough.
Well written and interesting!
