Review
“Wise and resonant...Toibin presents an evocative, engaging portrait not only of ‘three prodigal fathers,’ as he calls them, but of Dublin in the 19th and early 20th centuries as ‘a place of isolated individuals, its aura shapeless in some way, a place hidden from itself, mysterious and melancholy.’" —Gregory Cowles, New York Times Book Review "Three compelling portraits... a short but entertaining, thoroughly engaging study on the agony of filial influence.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"A vivid and knowledgeable depiction of nineteenth-century cultural life in the Irish capital…Tóibín portrays three giants of Irish literature and their city in a new and clarifying light.” —Booklist, (starred review) “Despite the focus on fathers, the works of the sons pervade this book, and Tóibín illuminates them with fresh readings…this study balances dexterous narration and Tóibín’s scholarly familiarity with his subjects’ place in Irish political and social history.” —Publishers Weekly“Mad, Bad, Dangerous to Know offers richly drawn portraits of fathers and sons, illuminating the influence rippling between generations…As charming as it is illuminating, Mad, Bad, Dangerous to Know provides a singular look at an extraordinary confluence of genius.” —Bookpage"This gentle, immersive book holds literary scholarship to be a heartfelt, heavenly pursuit.” —Thomas Mallon, The Washington Post "Juicy, wry and compelling... an entertaining and revelatory little book about the vexed relationships between these three pairs of difficult fathers and their difficult sons.” —Maureen Corrigan, The Wall Street Journal “Both odd and wonderful…you will be…evocatively entertained, especially if you fancy Dublin, as Tóibín clearly does…Dublin’s streets, pubs, libraries and shops, for Tóibín, are lively with ghosts.” —Claude Peck, The Minneapolis Star Tribune "These famous men and the fathers who helped shape them come alive in Tóibín's retelling, as do Dublin’s colorful inhabitants.” —Esquire “An engaging study of influence, ambition, love—and their discontents.” —Brian Dillon, 4Columns

An easy look back on the sometimes--or often--troubled lives of the fathers of three notable Irish writers. Unexpected interrelationships between the families and the geographical backgrounds of Wilde, Yeats, and Joyce stud this pleasant literary history. Those who enjoy Dublin and are interested in the wellsprings of Irish literature will find this short book by Colm Toibin worthwhile.Along this general literary path, I would also recommend "Time Pieces: A Dublin Memoir" by John Banville.
I found this book fascinating, but I think you would need to be very knowledgeable about Irish literature in the 20th century, particularly the works of Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats and James Joyce to feel the same. The book by Irish author Colum Toibin consists of four chapters. The introductory chapter details Toibin's own experiences coming to Dublin as a student and realizing how similar the city was to a century ago. Then remaining three chapters each cover one of the principal writers in this group biography. In The Emminent Victorians, we learn of Oscar Wilde's aristocratic roots, including a father whose scandal previews Wilde's own legal woes. His background drove him from the hinterlands of Ireland to urbane life in London. "Nature," Wilde said, "birds flying around uncooked." The chapter on Yeats was especially interesting to me personally, as it cites the work and recounts conversations with the late William Murphy. Prof. Murphy wrote a book about Jack Yeats called the Prodigal Father and in the 70s I took his course at Union College in Schenectady NY on WB Yeats and the Irish Renaissance. But for me the strongest chapter was the last one, on James Joyce. It probably reflects my personal preference for Joyce of the three writers under discussion, but I also felt that Joyce's father was the most fully realized character of the three fathers here. Highly recommended for those with an interest in Irish 20th century culture.
I liked the description of Dublin and the common ground covered by the three families. They were challenging fathers all.
Well researched and written, but not enough about how these fathers related to and influenced their famous sons.
A wonderful book for anyone who loves literature. I would have given it a five had I been a Joyce scholar—I knew enough about the other two authors to understand and appreciate everything.
This book was very helpful for my research, though parts of it sound very much like doctoral thesis work and are a bit dense for a causal read, overall it was very enjoyable.
