had to read this book for my Latin American sexuality and gender class. It was the perfect addition to our section on sex work and masculinity in the Dominican Republic section. Sheds light on the many problems and situations that lead people to make less than optimal decisions

The book arrived on date and in perfect conditions. It is an excellent ethnograpic in which the author questions the modern ocidental values in human relations by demonstrating that money is a vital part in the realtions established nowadays. Moreover, the author shows that, unlike the negative value attributed to the money in affetive relation between men, the money is a strong positive component that transforms the subjectivities of the involved in these relations.

I visit the Dominican Republic regularly and have extended family there. Even with that connection, I still was not able to understand the background and motives of the so-called 'sanky panky' or the 'buggerones'. This book (which is a published doctoral dissertation) is a great read for anyone who is curious about the reasoning of those involved in the pleasure industry and want to know how this lifestyle came about. Although the book was written in 1999/2000, many of the places and activities are still relevant today. The writer goes into painstaking detail to explain the ethnograpic and historical context, complete with survey data and results, to give readers insight of those involved in the pleasure industry in the Dominican Republic. You will not be disappointed.

Most studies of sex tourism focus on female sex workers with foreign male clients. Even some studies look at men involved in sex work with foreign women. This book tries to fill in a gap by discussing Dominican men who sell sex to foreign male tourists. This book tries to break a rigid hetero/homo dichotomy by showing the many men who engage in hustling but with no desire for other males.There is a rare but excellent anthology called "Caribbean Masculinities" and the author's contribution is reprinted here. Really, I hope this book is a sign that the author got tenure somewhere. The info in this book is similar to another study about "pingueros" in Cuba. Those who saw the French-language film "Vers le Sur" may also enjoy this.The book NEVER mentions "the down-low" and this is understandable as the study takes place outside the United States. Nevertheless, for those interested in reading about Black men who get busy with men on the hush-hush, they'll want to read this book. The interviewees here never suggest that kicking it with men means they don't have women at home and desire women all the time. There's a lot of "don't ask, don't tell" here too. Relatives of these men don't question how men who are penniless on Friday afternoon can now pay the rent on Monday morning. There's also machismo here where women are conditioned not to question their male partners and these male sex workers can lie about getting with women when they are actually selling to men.Let me mention the most important comment to me in this book: "[The Zona Colonial] also stands as the most vivid symbol of what has been described as a kind of Dominican "hispanophilia"--an exaggerated identification with all things of Spanish origin, and a simultaneous denial (and repression) of the African cultural influences on contemporary Dominican society" (81). A whole mess of books and word-of-mouth mention how Dominicans go out of their ways to downplay or deny being Black. While the author brings this up only once, I really wish he would have spoken about race more. He dances around it as many people in that nation do. A student could write an awesome paper comparing this book and "What's Love Got to Do with It?" and they will note how the latter is explicit about Blackness when the former plays into the denial.Sometimes the book felt long-winded. However, this was not another anthropological text in which a writer just recalls, "First I did this, then I did that." This was an informative book about Black bisexuality in a transnational context.

One of my favorites! Malaysia is home to animals like the Saltwater Crocodile, which can grow to 20 feet in length. Orangutans also live here, and are arboreal animals. I am very happy to have this book! The scenery is also great--palm trees, tropical waters, etc.

As the title implies this beautiful volume is about Malaysia's incredible natural diversity. The fact that it also covers some of the regions peoples and their affairs is of added interest but it is really a dream for anyone who is interested in nature and ecology. Great book for grandparents

My 21 month old son loves when I read this book to him. I'm not sure if it's the pictures or the content, but he loves it. When it's time for bed this is always one of the books he grabs for me to read.As for the adult opinion, I think it's a fun, simple book for getting the camping bug into your child at an early age. Each page only had one or two sentences so it's great for my 1 year old, but too simple for my 4 year old.

We had the just me and my mom book so we gotThe just me and my dad bookThey are cute books, I enjoy reading them to my daughter.I wouldn't suggest these to a family that doesn't have "traditional gender rolls" as the mom book is about the kid being dragged around for shopping and the dad book is about doing guy stuff like fishing and tipping the cannoe.I am one to drag someone around all day for shopping, and my husband bought our daughter a fishing pole when she was 1 so it was accurate to our lives.

My daughter started out reading these books 13 years ago and now I have a son. I can tell you that having these books on hand helped her reach her AR reading goal every month in school. She could take the test on the book in 1st grade and really get points and awards in class which boosted her self esteem. We love the art of the newer critter books a bit better than the older ones (this one is older) but the stories are perfect. This time around I plan on getting lots of these books for my son because early reading is so essential!

I fish often with my 6 year old son, and he's in the process of learning to read. So, basically I got this because of the photo on the front. I'm glad I got it! It's just long enough for a 6 year old to read without him asking to stop, and the words are just large enough to need a little help every now and then. Perfect!

This book came perfectly package in great condition will definitely buy again I have 5-year-old learning to read and he loves the series of books. They're simple to understand. They're easy for young children to follow along. they're easy to read. They follow a nice simple three sentences max per line page there is sometimes a rhyming scheme to help with learning to read. The pictures help children to understand and tell the story. They're not too long and they're not too short so you can get a read or two out and then he's out for the night they also tend to have good lessons in them for just teaching kids how to behave and be good kids. There are good morals in it. It is great to see that there are books to encourage and foster a good relationship between Fathers & Sons. We need more books like this out there.

My dad when I was a baby called me critter. So for Father's day I bought this book to tell him what I want to with him. This is an excellent read, great children book, and nice gift for anyone dad. The critter series have been a great addition to any child library!

In addition to this book, I also got Just Me and My Mom. These are the first 2 books I have bought for my new granddaughter. Both of her parents were smiling as they read these books as I was when they arrived at my house.The illustrations are precious and the story is simple and cute! I am so happy with both books that I plan on buying the entire series of Little Critter! I would also try any other children's books by this author!

I used to read this book with my dad when I was little- as well as most of the other mercer Mayer books- and it always loved them. so when I found out I was pregnant with my first child I bought this for my husband for Father's day. now I'm sharing mercer my with both my kids and it feels like I get to share a little piece of my childhood with them. I really liked this travelogue. The author starts north in Torino and moves south geographically instead of her actual chronology. She is very descriptive and tells some stories about their travels in many cases but in some instance just lists restaurant and places to go. I would have like more detail in those spots. I like that she has added recipes and plan on trying a few. This book makes me want to get online and book a trip right now. I also like that she included links to reading material related to the place so that I can get further information on interesting topics. However, I have two major gripes with this book. The first is a lack of a map of any kind. I know, I can go to google maps and look something up but it is tedious, time consuming and breaks the flow of the book. The second is a lack of photos. I wanted photos of some of the specific places or foods she talked about but I also wanted pictures of the finished product in the recipes. When she described an egg stall at a market, I wanted to see the multishaped, multicolored eggs. When she described a carved, green marble ambo in a church, I wanted to see it. This book would have been much more powerful and interesting with photos. I think these are major flaws that hopefully will be fixed by publication. I’ll give it three stars now but would give it four of five if maps and photos are added. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

4.5 starsMayes brings her delectable writing style to the pages of this travelogue/memoir/guide for all of us who wish we could take two weeks to walk in her shoes. Italy isn't just a place but an attitude and way of living, something Mayes makes clear through gently describing the distinctions between one little town and another.This is not a book you pick up with your map in hand to help you plan your trip to Italy so much as it is like a first date (or first date in a long time) with the Italian way to spend your day. Yes, she has the book organized in such a way that you could look up the province and town you want to visit to see her recommendations. However, she doesn't cover every little town (nor should she, as this isn't Frommer's) and she presents them in a well-organized tapestry of anecdotes of her experiences there. Mayes implies so much about what it means to be Italian and live like one without having to hold your hand to communicate it.Read it because I have a feeling you'll learn how to appreciate Italy after you travel through it with her. Perhaps you'll even find a way to sit in a cafe around your own corner and ponder with peaceful quiet the way she can in Italy. You'll get both story and guide in this book. Thank you, Frances Mayes! Now I'm saving up for another trip to Italy!

As a result, the reader will enjoy the historic and cultural places she explores. The prose is delightful even when describing a flat tire north of Bologna and, especially, when describing the sights, smells and sounds of Italy. She often includes details of their meals, along with some very tempting recipes.See You in the Piazza takes the reader off the beaten path. It’s a wonderful book for anyone who has visited Italy or contemplates a trip in the future. And, be sure to have a map handy so you can visual the areas and plan your own adventures. newbie author to me, France Mayes ... i look forward to reading more from her soon enough!! love the cover!! now i have seen the movie " Under The Tuscan Sun" with Diane Lane a billion times, love that movie, i am curious if it follows the authors read to the tee or what? I was super lucky to get an ARC ...not sure if this was a Goodreads giveaway or? no literature was in the book when i got it shipped to me??! love that when that happens but wish i knew who to thank??! thanks!! i love cooking, recipes ... i would love to see Italy and Australia ...yet to get to travel overseas. we have many locations in the US and Canada. so it was like this book was meant for me ... to tide me over a bit ..while i wait to see Italy ... i know i am part Italian ... i just gotta be ...not that i have been told so but i feel it. lol! no clue. just wish i was. i am not the only one to feel it was really a great trip to Italy ... like u were there ... will they make it a movie?

Frances Mayes is a marvelous writer. She brings the essence of Italy to armchair travelers. I enjoyed reading her prose.However, this is mostly a reference book for travelers wanting to get off the beaten trail in Italy. If you were to go to these places, this book would be invaluable in finding terrific places to eat and unusual but wonderful places to visit. She takes her husband and grandson along for her trip to give a couple of other perspectives and cover other interests than her own.Five stars for the prose, three stars for lack of a story that Mayes usually does so well, splitting the middle with four stars.

Frances Mayes' writing transports me. It's impossible to read her work without realizing she's a poet. It's also impossible to read her work and not want to start planning your trip to Italy ASAP. I loved this book as much as I''ve loved ever other thing written by the amazing Ms. Mayes, and I've read every word. Thank You!

About the Author

Andrew Evans first arrived in the Ukraine in 1994, and worked there for two years. His love for such a rapidly changing country kept him returning wearing many different hats – as a NATO analyst, a graduate student, political consultant, and finally as the author of Ukraine. Andrew now works as a freelance travel writer. He is also a regularly featured speaker on travel destinations at the Smithsonian Institution and has appeared on the Travel Channel. He is also the author of Iceland for which he won the 2008 Lowell Thomas Award.  Massimiliano Di Pasquale first travelled to the Ukraine in 2004 and has been back to explore the country many times since. Photographer, writer and journalist, Massimiliano writes regularly about Ukrainian culture and politics for many Italian magazines and newspapers. In 2007 he interviewed President Viktor Yushchenko for Italian geopolitical magazine east. In 2010 he published the photographic book In Ucraina. Immagini per un diario (In the Ukraine. The only travel book on the Ukraine is the Bradt. They aren't my favorites but I replaced a 3rd edition with it. Some glaring errors like a town described as 70 km W of Liev is actually 70 km East. Oh well.

Visited the Ukraine in November 2014 and bought this book a week before I lefton my trip. It was very useful and I hope to use it again when I return. There is not much outthere on Ukraine tourism but there should be.This author writes in a very comprehensive and interesting way. You don't feel your readinga guidebook from 20 different contributing authors. The book feels like it was written by someonewho knows the country and has enjoyed visiting. The book also feels like the author wants you toenjoy it as much as he does.

I recently returned from a trip to Chernobyl, Kiev and Lviv. I loved this book. Really helpful historical material.

This is relatively thorough guide, but it could use a few more visuals and photos. Some of the sections are a bit out of date and could use some updating to include newer hotels, restaurants, etc., but overall, the guide is thoughtfully done and includes important information about the history of Ukraine.

I found this book on Ukraine very interesting. For a more contemporary fictionalized view I also enjoyed the new spy novel "Death of a Spymaster" that is set in Kiev at the beginning of the current conflict with Russia.

Robert Shaw has written several great books and Extreme Teams is tops among them. Shaw has dug deep to uncover some of the key ingredients to building and sustaining incredibly productive and creative teams at companies including Pixar, Whole Foods, Airbnb, Zappos and Patagonia. Going way beyond the fundamentals that many of us know and practice, Shaw highlights a variety of things these companies and teams get right, while also acknowledging that the success of these companies is not solely related to teams and that you can’t simply import a set of practices into your company without understanding the culture and context you have, and how these practices fit and get supported.Shaw does a thorough job of discussing the upsides and downsides of 5 core concepts: 1) fostering a shared obsession for the work of the firm and even its role in society, 2) valuing the fit of team members (the right people) over experience (the best people), 3) focusing more on critical priorities where success is clearly defined, and avoiding distractions while developing approaches to allowing autonomy need to explore, 4) pushing harder in tough measurable ways while also pushing softer in dealing with weaknesses, and 5) taking comfort in discomfort, getting the right conflicts on the table and resolved well so they can take on the big challenges and risks needed to be creative. He helps us consider the need for social capital and how it helps bond teams together without the risks of excessive relationships and how the search for equilibrium can undercut the potential of an extreme team. A particularly strong part of the book is his capture of the look and feel of cutting edge cultures: all in, autonomous, transparent, accountable, playful and communal. With 30 years experience of working with leadership and project teams, there have been few that I could describe in that way. A last area that is incredibly useful is his capture of a key set of questions leaders of new teams need to ask themselves before embarking on creating an extreme team.

Very insightful, and a new way to look at mangement of teams. It helped to explain the success of some of today's most innovative companies. Not only educational, but interesting and entertaining at the same time. Highly recommended!
