This is a terrific book for the beginning amateur astronomer contemplating getting more serious with the hobby. It offers a solid, broad overview of observing runs, as well as all-important navigation tips for those just learning to star-hop and need a hand finding their way across the night sky. I would recommend pairing it with Dickinson & Dyer's Backyard Astronomer's Guide..

This is a complete, enjoyable starter volume for a beginner and useful for an amateur astronomer.One minor quibble. The section on equipment and other remarks in the book might discourage a beginner from looking for a starter telescope by exaggerating the cost of one.There are now several small Dobsonian reflectors available from Orion and others starting around $100, also available through Amazon of course, with parabolic mirrors of 4 to 4.5 inches which used with care can provide fine images of the objects described in Nightwatch. Technology has significantly advanced in the production of small scopes since the latest Nightwatch printing and a beginner can achieve a really good experience with these little tabletop Dobsonians,For older amateurs, Turn Left at Orion is a similar basic reference book for beginners with a small telescope.

As the number one selling amateur astronomy book in the world (and here on Amazon), I think most would buy this holding fairly high expectations. And I am happy to report that for the most part, the book lives up to the hype. It provides an easily accessible framework based on the constellations of the Big Dipper (Ursa Major) and Orion for then orienting and helping any amateur astronomer to get out viewing under the stars. The chapters are logically laid out from understanding the scale of the universe to the layout of the constellations to picking a first telescope to the observation of major celestial sights. Mr Dickinson does a great job of including some great inserts on major star names and their origins, future upcoming lunar and solar eclipses and detailed data on how to view the planets. Perhaps my favorite illustration of the book is the one showing the constellations of the Zodiac laid out in the correct direction relative to the Milky Way galaxy. There are also a great many detailed star charts available in the book which will help any northern hemisphere owner achieve proper orientation to the night sky. The book is also very good as discussing amateur astronomy from several points of view, including naked eye observation, binocular viewing and for those owning telescopes.At about 190 pages, the book can easily be read over the period of a week or so with the observer then coming back frequently to use the star charts. The only caveat I can think of is that the book is perhaps not as detailed as some gear heads and more serious observers might hope for. As a complete newbie when I purchased the book, I found every chapter insightful but now that I have more experience, I would also recommend interested readers who want more meat to take a look at another book by Dickinson, 'The Backyard Astronomer's Guide'. BAG as it is known to astronomers is basically a more detailed version of Nightwatch. It has some of the basic detail of Nightwatch but with a great deal of depth that Nightwatch does not have (especially concerning telescope gear and equipment) plus many new topics. Nightwatch does have many nice sky maps which BAG does not. Basically if you wish to get into night sky viewing occasionally or without equipment, or with binoculars or a small cheaper telescope, then Nightwatch is your best bet. However, if you are pretty sure that celestial viewing is going to be a major hobby for you and you crave more detail, then I recommend ordering Nightwatch and the BAG book together.Overall, I really enjoyed the book and am still using the star charts during observations. There is no wasted space in the book and it will certainly help out any new backyard astronomer. Easily five stars!

Buy this book before you buy a telescope!If you are completely new to stargazing, constellations, and telescopes but want to learn, look no further than this book. The author presents an easy system to navigate the constellations (which are a roadmap to other objects), although it does take some investment of time and effort on your part. I especially like how the constellations are shown pictorially next to an actual picture of the sky showing the constellation. But at the end of the day, you have to go out at night and try to find the constellations.The section discussing types of telescopes and their comparative strength and weaknesses is very useful to someone who does not own a telescope. The advice on a good stand is priceless for those contemplating their first purchase. The book also touches on astrophotography, but only in passing. You have to learn the basics of navigating the sky first.I do have one HUGE complaint about this book. While the pictures are stunning and beautiful, they are NOTHING like you can expect to see with a small, amateur telescope. I think setting the wrong expectations for what people can expect is dishonest and sets them up for disappointment and disillusionment. If not for the pictures, I would have given this 5 stars.

As I was getting closer to retirement, I followed a lifetime desire to learn more about the cosmos. This book has been a valuable guide for several years now. I loved the section on The Universe in Eleven Steps. I recommend this book to anyone that has looked up at the night sky and wondered.

I read everything in this book including the captions and the last chapter, and was not disappointed. It was recommended on a website I visited just before deciding on whether or not to invest money in equipment for backyard astronomy. The follow-up book, Backyard Astronomer's Guide, is a bigger and more detailed reference book, but NightWatch is excellent for beginners. The book lays flat and has just the right information for a beginner. I highly, highly recommend this book, which is written exceptionally well.

If you have a desire to gaze upwards and wonder at the stars, this is a must for you. I started to learn the star names and positions, and now I don't see just a maze of white lights in the night sky. Instead I see Orion's belt, Ursa Major, Procyon, and all the other wonders, and thanks to this book have become an amateur astronomer. Reading and studying this book will change your view of the sky forever, like it did mine, and for the better.

This book is a huge step up from the basic gnome, simple animals and landscape instructions. With the techniques taught you can produce something that's more refined, detailed and elegant. There are lots of illustrations and instructions, a wide variety of project ideas, and all the projects are simply gorgeous. I also didn't expect to get a cloth bound book for this price. That does make it difficult to keep it open but it shows an attention to quality. I look forward to spending a lot of time using this book as a resource.

This book is beautiful! It’s binding, cover, and inside photos are stunning. It’s a hardcover book with exceptional quality, from lovely page weight to outstanding editing. When I hold it and flip through its pages, I can feel it was truly a work of love and creative passion. But all that is just the surface. To make it more valuable, the projects are not just enchanting and inspiring, but superbly thought out! The author-artist starts with basic skill lessons and each project shows a new technique so that it takes the reader from introducing 2d (flat) needle felting, aka wool painting, to seriously advanced work. But the instructions are so logical and easy to follow that you are doing advanced techniques almost naturally. I also love that the writing is concise. No wasted words, and super valuable in an art or craft book...you don’t have pages and pages of explanation. Ms. Ives intuitively knew the right amount of explanation to teach, along with lovely, detailed step by step photos. All combined, this book is very easy to follow, and makes it simple for anyone of any skill level to follow. I’m an experienced 3d sculptural needle felt artist, and when I saw Ms. Ives’ realistic work, I passionately wanted to learn 2d wool painting...and thanks to her generous nature of sharing her techniques in this book, I’m excited about my new passion! As you can tell, I highly recommend this book!

Dani is such a skilled artist in her own right, and I love that she shares her method. I was very excited about this book and it did not disappoint. Those of us with experience in other fiber arts can skim over introductory sections and go directly to the techniques and projects. The projects are tasteful and inspiring, and I look forward to attempting some of them! The hardcover book is also beautifully produced, with a matte image and a cloth binding. Lovely experience all around!

I'm disappointed with this purchase for several reasons. The first is that there are several very basic typos and informational errors that should not have slipped through editing. There are a few grammatical errors which are understandable as I assume Mr. Wintermeyer's first language is German, but those show a lack of polish.I paid $47 and change for this volume, and at that price point, I expect something on the level of The Rails 5 Way. It, too, has the occasional typo, but it does not have factually contradictory statements (that I can find). In this book, we are told that passing an argument of "false" to a function returns both extra information and truncates the extra information (within about 4 or 5 pages). There are snippets of console response that are clearly copy-pasted from a previous command that should show different output, in an example where the output is what's being discussed.In addition, the information is extremely basic and terse. This is a great primer for beginners, and has almost no value to anyone who has read any other book about Rails. It moves quickly, and would be well-suited to an established developer who has never seen a line of Rails code and wants to get the basics fast.The last disappointment was the Active Storage chapter, the main addition of 5.2. The railsguides.org section on Action Storage actually contains more information and examples.In short, this is a primer and is, in my opinion, vastly overpriced for the value of its information. The style is accessible and the plain language is easily understandable. The approach is sound and the pacing good for a very shallow dive (not a bad thing) into concepts.I don't think I can ask for a refund, so I console myself with the thought that at least I supported a developer who is making an effort to provide education. I would recommend this book not be purchased outside the $10-$20 range unless it is greatly expanded.

I have been a pro Rails developer for some time now. The earlier version of this book plus another book were the books that really made me love the Rails framework. This is actually the book that got me going. With very limited knowledge, I had struggled to understand some basic concepts in web development but getting this book turned things around.In every endeavour, there has to be some foundation, some fundamental but essential knowledge that will demystify some seemingly ‘scary’ concepts, for me and Rails this was the book I had been missing.I knew what cookies were previously but didn’t understand how sessions were and how they worked with Rails. It’s with such knowledge that I gained from this book that would later help me to fully understand how login/logout works and even build my own from scratch without a gem.Rails 5.2 comes with new concepts like ActiveStorage, I turned again to this book to get just an idea what the hell it is and how it works and trust me, this book does a good job at showing what you need to know; couple that with the Rails Guides and you’re set to writing code that works…quickly.Mind you, it’s not for everyone. No single book can provide everything if we treat them only as a resource. Common sense with leveraging other resources for any skill is necessary, for me, this book and good ol’ Google saw me through my early days.

This book is a great way to pick up Ruby (it’s covered in the book) and Rails for beginners.In general, this book consists of the sequential presentation of Rails libraries.Besides, the book has dedicated chapters to:* caching;* advanced SQL queries;* working with sessions;* setup Rails for the production environment;* deployment.Which are, IMO, usually lack in other Rails books.I think that the information gathered in this book is very helpful for beginners.

Not only is Stefan's book thorough, but it provides beginners with a solid foundation (such as proper scaffolding and caching) that many other books often lack. Using the "Rails way" Stefan explains how to build better web applications by focusing on speed and optimization. Two thumbs up!

I have read quite a few interviews with Gianni Russo over the years and after reading this book I went back and reread quite a few to verify that I wasn't crazy. Mr. Russo is a great story teller. Over the years his assertions and accounts of his life have varied greatly and seemed to grow in scope and importance. The book appears to be a rehashing of his accomplished life with excessive embellishments. He now claims as part of his exploits to have been a courier for the Godfather of Godfathers, an intermediary for the mob who convinced Joey Gallo to allow the filming of the Godfather to take place; a conduit for a mob/Vatican money laundering scheme; a contact point (via his doctor's wife) for the Shah of Iran to get his money out of the country mere hours before his regime fell...Said money being once again laundered by his contacts in the Vatican Bank...a murderer not once but twice....(one killing is public record); and even been tortured by the one and only Pablo Escobar for the killing of one of his soldiers. This was all accomplished while bedding Marilyn Monroe, Liza Minelli and a bevy of other starlets. Gianni soft shoes topics of paternity and lawsuits. The book is a quick read and worthy of a cross country flight or perhaps a day on the beach. It suffers from poor editing and a confusing timeline or perhaps just a confused author as it jumps around with disparate events from various decades seemingly taking place at once. If his "history" is accurate...it is a pity that the editors couldn't organize the book in chronological order, provide a modicum of proof or backup to Gianni's claims. If he did half of what he claims it would make a great movie. I enjoyed it but found many similarities between his story and various plots or subplots of the mob movies that have been hits over the years. Wait for paperback or buy it used.

To be perfectly honest this reviewer had doubts about whether he would like this autobiography. There is just something odd about paying money to read about a confessed mobster. And the fact that the same mobster was able to threaten and then make friends with some of this reviewer’s favorite actors was also unsettling. However, once I started reading I couldn’t stop. The book is a slam-dunk page-turner. I’m so glad the author Gianni Russo survived to share his life-adventures with the readers of this volume. And survival was not assured for Russo. He had a very close call with death when he went to Columbia to see Pablo Escobar after he had shot and killed one of Escobar’s hoods sent to set up his Las Vegas cocaine network. That was one close call for Russo. What finally saved Russo was the fact that Escobar loved the movie “Godfather” including the character Russo had played as Carlo Rizzi, who married Michael Corleone’s sister. Escobar even acted out Rizzi’s confession scenes with Michael Corleone. Russo was afraid that Escobar would even recreate Rizzi’s strangulation scene in the car where he kicked out the windshield. I’d wanted to read the book for the information Russo had written about Marilyn Monroe, whom he dated and confided in for years in NYC. I have to agree with his theory about who killed Marilyn and how. Russo was also shipped out of the USA for almost two years because he felt that he had played a minor messenger role in the killing of JFK. Most of the people connected with that event were killed shortly after the event and Russo felt he’d seen Lee Harvey Oswald with New OrleansMob boss Carlos Marcello just prior to the Dallas Assassination of JFK. Russo’s boss Frank Costello had chosen to protect his long-time delivery boy from both the police and rest of the mob by sending him to Europe. The book is filled with Russo’s friendships with Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, Sammy Davis, Jr. etc, etc. He had affairs with Liza Minelli and dozens of other movie stars in addition to Marilyn Monroe. There are some great experiences detailed in this autobiography. It’s difficult to put aside once started. And as Russo admits, “I’ve never physically hurt anyone unless it meant my survival."

Mr. Russo has lived a dozen lives in one lifetime; successful club owner, mafia associate, actor in one of the most recognized and beloved films of all time, and more. He's rubbed elbows with the elite that the rest of us can only dream of, and yet, when you read this book, he still comes off as an every day Joe, never condescending nor forgetting his humble and rather heartbreaking roots. From the moment I downloaded this book into my Kindle, I was hooked. His descriptions and anecdotes made me feel as if I were right there, living each moment with him. I am now even more a fan of his work, and admire his strength in how much he's kept overcoming and keeping his chin up, never once losing his faith in himself nor his faith in God. Ok where to begin.... This to me was not a typical Shape shifter wolf/ love story. I love shape shifter books and I felt torn with this one. All though there are some good points there were to many I just did not care for. The attraction between the 2 main characters was not what most wolf shifters are described to be with one they are interested in. I did not see a protective nature, wanting to keep the female close. There are different breeds of wolves in this story and the noble ones seem to be portrayed as week and scared. I do not want to give away to much of the story so I will end this now and simply say not sure I will continue the series as I was a bit disappointed.

This book was a solid beginning to the series. I enjoyed getting to know Brie and Cayden. I really wasn’t expecting some of the sadder plot twists. By the end, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to the wolves. On to book 2. Four glittery stars!

I love teen paranormal books especially when werewolves are involved. But this book was terrible. The plot was nonexistent and confusing, the relationship between the two main characters was weird, and the high school setting was unrealistic. When I bought the book, my expectations were pretty low considering I bought it for 99 cents, but even so, it disappointed me.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking foward to book 2 to see were it leads Cayden and Brie. Looking foward to seeing what others secrets may be answeres

Definitely teen based but flows nicely. This is a first book to a series with a good storyline. Twist and turns inevitable.

“If you like ya paranormal romance, girl protagonists, and dark fantasy, you'll love Wolf Bound.”That’s what the publisher’s blurb promised, and wow Holly Hook totally more than delivered on that promise. I’m not going to do a replay of the plot as that blurb gives you all you need to know without spoiling anything. Instead I will simply note that Brianna (Brie) and Cayden’s story in Wolf Bound (The Alpha Legacy Book One) is, well, how about not just totally fun (though it is) but “wonderfully superb”? If you can think of a better superlative add that on too. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

Great start to a new series! Brie is a small town girl who loves theater. She meets a mysterious new guy to town and her life is changed forever. While going through the normal everyday events of school, homework & working at the family grocery store Brie comes to discover a whole new world of which she is part of. Werewolves are real, so are hunters and Brie’s family is far more connected than she was told. Cayden walks into Brie’s life and her world changes forever. Beauty & the Beast is a very fitting play for the school to be performing. This is a fun read. If you liked Twilight you’ll love this book. With all the excitement in book 1 can’t wait to see what book 2 has in store for us!!I received a copy of this book for free from the author. I was given a copy for my honest review.This book is a great opening to a supernatural teen romance series. The plot is very fast moving with seemingly typical high school students and personas. When a new kid arrives, the main character questions who he really is, while helping her only family keep their home, which seems impossible. Soon, secrets unravel while the main character chooses the harder path for love. The main character continues to show her strength throughout the book. The book leaves several ideas floating in the air which will hopefully be covered in the next book. It had an interesting ending. Overall, very well written.
