I think that Fast Break by Mike Lupica is a very fascinating book. Jayson the main character is a great teammate, an aggressive player, and has to persevere through hard times. This book is a very suspenseful book and shows how lucky some of us are. This story takes place in North Carolina. He starts off living on his own trying to not get picked up by Child Protective Services but blows his cover. So he gets taken to a nicer part of town with a foster family. Now trying to make the basketball playoffs comes a challenge with his new team.My first reason is that he is a great teammate. One way to show this is, “He could have kept it for an easy bucket but passed instead,’’pg 88. This shows he is a great teammate because he could have kept it but decided to pass. Another piece of evidence is, “ With fists flying through the air Jayson tries an attempt at stopping it,” This shows he is a good teammate because he tried to stop a fight to save his friends. And that is two reasons why he is a good teammate.My second reason is that he is an aggressive player. Like on pg 213 it says, “Jayson was trying to keep his voice low even though he was spitting mad,”pg 63. This shows he is an aggressive player because he wants to just yell. Also in the story it says, “He was playing mad like always,” This shows that he is an aggressive player because he was playing like he has something to prove. And those are my two reasons that he is an aggressive player. And my last reason that it is a fascinating book is that Jayson has to persevere through tough times. In the book it says “With his mom gone, Jayson knew it wouldn't be long before Richie left him too,”pg 11. This shows that he had to persevere even without anyone to take care of him. My second piece of evidence is “ Why didn't you tell me they were black?,” (his foster parents). This shows that he had to persevere because he got nervous around black people. There are some examples to show how he had to persevere. All in all, we can learn that if you just keep going at it you will eventually get it. I would read Fast Break over and over because it is so unpredictable! I rate this 5 out of 5 stars.

I really liked the story. I recommend it 200%. It is about a boy named Jayson who's mother dies and he is forced to live with a family who he struggles with at first, but then starts clicking with them. He plays for the school team and leads them far. I wish the author could make the story more about his life away from b-ball.

This book is great for middle-teens, young men, and even helpful to older men. Would be excellent for premarital counseling. It is not a silver bullet, nor does it claim to be. However, there is a lot of very helpful information and advice for pastors and counselors, perhaps some of the best I've read in all my years of ministry. You will get your money's worth if you are seeking help for you or someone else. It is totally bible-based, but even if you don't believe in God, you will find help.

This is a really good book about why pornography/lust/masturbation is a sin. It gives practical tips on how to overcome the struggle as well as Biblical theology behind why these things are so wrong. It's also a really short read, which is always a plus. It could probably be a little bit more practical, but I don't think that was the purpose of the book. Not sure if I'd recommend it for JH or HS students, but it probably wouldn't hurt... For sure great for those in college and beyond.

I have read a few books on this subject and have taken from each of them. I prefer these types of books when there are written by an author who is familiar with the subject as opposed to someone who has not suffered from this vice. This was well written and had thoughtful questions for the reader. There was no false hope or hype built into this book as I have read in others. What I mean by that is that the author does not portent to have the magic bullet to solve this problem but rather helps you see where the failings in this lifestyle are and how to recognize and avoid some common signs and trappings of the habit. I read the Kindle edition so I don't know how many pages it was but it was a quick read.

I'm a pastor, and I've used this book as a form of first aid for men dealing with pornography addiction. This book is a good tool for that purpose. Of course, there is no magic bullet for this problem, but beginning to see sexuality from a healthy perspective is a great starting point for recovery. I'm thankful Challies has put this together!

Tim gets right to the point in this short book, but it is filled with excellent reasons to pursue purity.Pornography, masturbation, and lost are not victimless crimes. They hurt the viewer, the man's relationships with other women, especially his wife, and the women who pose for the pictures. Tim helps expose how horrifying this cluster of sins is, but he goes on to show how wonderful, delightful, and joyful sex is in the marriage relationship.Tim answered a question I had wondered for many years: why did God give men such a strong sex drive? Tim answers that God wants the man to be motivated to pursue his wife, to lovingly romance her, and to have sex with her often. God wants the husband and wife to find intimate union often. The sex drive is not the problem, it is the illegitimate ways men seek to fulfill that urge.I heartily recommend this book to every man.

This book should be read by every man no matter what his religious persuasion. Our responsibility to our wives, family, and especially to our Creator is highlighted and explained. The insidious nature of porn on our very psyche is seldom considered when the urge to be involved with it takes over. The scars of indulgence in this degrading medium are long-lasting and impossible to heal without God's grace and forgiveness. There is hope though. The promise of forgiveness and healing are there for the asking.

This is an excellent resource for men who are in any stage of battling porn. My only criticism is that it seems to be geared more toward married men -- or rather, I should say, it focuses mostly on marriage and the effects looking at porn will have on the marriage relationship. Which is all true, but I wish he had focused more on fighting porn just because you are pursuing Christ-likeness. But even as a single guy, I found this book extremely helpful.

I was stoked when I saw this book on NetGalley, a feminist book about how important female friendships are? It was right up my alley. Unfortunately, I ended up being somewhat disappointed by the content. Overall, the book is well-written and makes a lot of important points. But these points are surrounded by a meandering narrative that ultimately seemed without purpose.There were also a couple of points made that I didn’t agree with. First and foremost was the idea that a woman could not have a man as a best friend, “it just doesn’t work that way.” I disagree wholeheartedly. While I see where the author is coming from, I have several male best friends who I’m just as close to as my non-male best friends. There’s nothing I don’t feel comfortable sharing with them, and while they may not have gone through all the same experiences as me, they’re still my best friends.The majority of the book is anecdotal, with references to pop culture. There’s a bit of historical research mixed in and very little, if any, current research. It’s the author talking about her friendships with women, and interviewing other women about their friendships. All these stories seem to come from a very limited subset of women — upper-middle class straight women. At least, that was the vibe I got. I didn’t mark down details about every single woman she interviewed, but this seemed to be the pattern I saw.There were a few other things that gave me some serious “yikes” vibes. The author is talking about a pair of best friends, one straight and one gay. She shared that the friends would go to gay bars together, which is fine, but that “Susanna liked being the only straight girl.” Being queer myself, I’m pretty sick of straight women co-opting gay spaces as their own and I found this inclusion completely unnecessary.Additionally, the author shared that she didn’t really care about feminism at all until Trump was elected. I think this goes to show the kind of privilege she has lived with, and that she isn’t really qualified to speak for women at large. I was surprised that she even admitted to this, but I think that just means that she doesn’t see any issue with it.I will note again that I am reading an unfinished copy, so it would be interesting to know if any of these things were left out of the final copy.Overall, Text Me When You Get Home was an enjoyable read. It was nice reading about relationships between women, but I didn’t feel like I was learning anything. I would be interested in seeing a book written about relationships between women that goes more in depth than this one, and that discusses women from different backgrounds. I won’t tell anyone not to read this book, but I think it’s good to go into it not expecting it to be a gamechanger.

Boy did I hate this book. It's like a mean girl wrote about how great she is and then got someone to publish it. Absolute garbarge. Not interesting, poorly written, dreary read.

For a book about female friendships it sure does spend a ridiculous amount of time talking about men. I was looking for a heartwarming pick-me-up while I'm feeling far away from all my closest friends but instead I found 100+ pages of how so many early friendships are super fake and then a bunch of gush about how adult friends are the bestest thing ever with no nuanced look at the complexities that make these relationships as special as they are. I legitimately started to question if my friendship experiences were somehow super rare since I've had close female friends since middle school and none of those friendships have ever resembled the "normal," "typically" relationships she describes.The introduction had potential, it went down hill from there.

The timing couldn’t be better for this book to be written. Although it doesn’t provide you with new revelations, per se, it’s fun as a woman to read a collection of facts and anecdotes that match your experiences and support a fact you already know: that your girlfriends are your rock and a part of your family. I love how this book challenges the supposition that women are “catty” and takes a hard look at the bias that pervades so many female stereotypes. I read this for an all-female book club and we rejoiced thoroughly in its “feel good” message and all of us walked away from this novel texting our BFFs around the world to let them know we love them, need them, and can’t live without them!

Reading this story of different friend, friend groups makes me appreciate and love every one of my girlfriends to tell them how smart, fun, inspiring they are to me. Thank you, Kayleen, for writing this book and sharing it with the world!

In searching Prolog courses on-line, this book is referenced as #1 over and over again. So far I have read about 1/2 the book. It does not disappoint. I find Prolog a hard language to get proficency. The "declarative style" of programming is very different from the other 3 paradigms of programming. (The other three are procedural, object oriented, and functional. As a prerequisite to this book I would suggest "The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs." ) This book gives lots of examples and exposition to get both a logical and intuitive feel of problem solving in Prolog. I am afraid it make take more than one reading to understand Prolog.

Having just read a book on automated reasoning which covered topics in logic, such as unification and resolution, I was very pleased with the prolog programming language, in that it takes concepts from logic, and uses them in ways that can be applied to a number of interesting areas of AI, such as NLP, planning, and expert systems. I thought Bratko succeeded in making this connection with logic, without burdening the reader with notation and concepts that are really not needed for writing or understanding prolog programs.The book also worked for me on the level of providing a good introduction to the syntax and sematics of the language. The first 200 pages succeed to this end.Finally, the last 13 chapters can be summarized as representing an introduction to AI from a prolog perspective. On the positive side, he shows how to apply prolog to all of the modern, main streams of AI study. However, on the negative, the slant towards prolog in these chapters tends to oversimplify these disciplines.My impression of the language is that it seems good as a prototying language, since it is declarative in nature, but from my experimentation (using SWI Prolog) I think I could write better implementations using c or java.In closing, Bratko's book represents a very good place to start learning prolog and the world of AI.

A new edition will be out soon, in 2010. This is an excellent book on Prolog *and* on AI.For example, chapter 19 is an introduction to inductive learning in first-order logic, an advanced topic rarely found in introductory books. The example program HYPER is a very powerful learner as compared to other "propositional" machine learning methods such as decision trees, neural networks, or support vector machines. I have ported HYPER to Lisp and am still exploring it.Prolog is not a very popular language nowadays, but basic knowledge of it is still essential to learning logic-based AI.

Professor Bratko has done a tremendous job of putting all the fundamental concepts of Prolog and its applications in various areas of AI. Although this book is focused on Prolog, the concepts that he has discussed are so fundamental that they can be implemented in other languages like Java as well.I recommend this book to everyone who wants to learn Prolog. I would also recommend the readers to use a Prolog system to work out the examples and exercises as s/he goes through every chapter. A DEC10 Prolog system (like SICStus Prolog) would probably be the best companion for this book.

Though I have just started this book, I can tell that it is going to be amazing. I have been trying to find a good introduction to Prolog for some time now, and this is exactly what I had been looking for. Clear presentation, beautiful and complete editing work, easy to understand, and comprehensive.If you do want to use this book for A.I. though, and you either already understand Prolog or would rather work in lisp/python/etc. this book may be a bit much for you, either in terms of redundancy or over-saturation. However, if you can manage to slug through it (it is rather huge at 678 pgs), I think that anyone interested in A.I. or Prolog could find something helpful in this book.Overall, I am excited to work through this book, and I will probably update my review once I have done so.

For a review of both Prolog and AI-based algorithms, this is the book to read! I learend Prolog AND AI from this in one semester, and it was my very last class bfore graduation. WE used Turbo Prolog and if you can find a copy, I'd recommend it.I've read reviews of this book that state Dr. BRatko is talking to peers or himself. I can't udnerstand it., The text was perfectly udnerstandable to me. And re-reading it, it still is. I plan to use the AI half of the book when writing my master's thesis next year.
