The subtitle differs a bit in two editions, "wilder" being subtracted, but the gist remains: a journalist, born in what was post-war Carmarthenshire, returning to his homeland to uncover intriguing stories and lots of anecdotes. Since this is a collection of pieces written over the past quarter-century, it does lack a controlling theme, although the entries are arranged in roughly thematic sections: people he knows, those from the past that he wishes he knew, and then on to more historical and localized events. My only caveat, which took this rating down, was the lack of any map. For non-Cymric readers like myself, a chart of Wales and the sites mentioned in his many itineraries would have been invaluable. Without it, there's a too-random feel as one entry follows another across his homeland, although this is not a fault of the essays themselves, only their compilation for a wider audience. Rogers writes chattily but hides beneath an affable nature his considerable craft in getting an article of one or two thousand words to reveal a great deal about both his own diligence in constructing a well-made essay and his intelligence in arranging details to build up to an often movingly narrated conclusion. He's also a master of getting you hooked from the start, and his stylistic tic of addressing the reader as "you" may hearken of an old-fashioned epistolary nature, but it does keep one's interest and moves the various stories along quickly.I have not said much about the actual contents of these collected tales, but suffice to say that although the wildness of many of them may be due more to mental than geographical conditions encountered, that they serve not only to entertain but to educate. Rogers avoids the cutesy details, the eccentric exaggerations of his subjects, or the folksy embellishment. As a native Welshman, and the first in his family line to actually write in English, his knowledge of both sides of the Welsh story means that this is a more rooted, rather than impressionistically superficial, excavation into the principality. His own pride, without being inflated or vain, about his hometown and its environs makes for a series of encounters that show his unending curiosity into the foibles and fantasies of his fellow countrymen and women makes for realistic, yet memorably distinctive, assorted conversations and ruminations. The untranslatable "hireath," a longing and a loyalty for the Welsh heritage and its manifestations, emerges in these pages of Rogers' travels.

For those of us who used to eagerly await the arrival of the Sunday papers to read his column, this collection of articles by the great Welsh storyteller is a long-awaited treat. Myth and history are given that contemporary insight that makes you feel that you can reach out and touch what is described and the contemporary is given a mythic quality that only a writer who has kept his sense of wonder can evoke. We have used the Borch laminated maps on several international trips and love them. They are durable, have very good detail, and are great for the preplanning we do. They can be taken out in the rain with out fear of disintegration. They don't break at the folds like other maps. Routes can be drawn directly on the map, notes can be written on the surface, then as you gain information the trip details can be wiped clean, or revised with a wet cloth. I have used ballpoint, grease pencils, and even Sharpies (I like the sharpie the best.) All can be cleaned off or modified as needed. We are currently in the planning stage of a trip to Chile and Argentina, and can not speak to the accuracy of these particular maps, but if past history is any indication of quality these too will be great.

Great, durable map that holds up well while traveling for weeks on end in a backpack. The lamination capability is really helpful to plan out routes with a dry-erase marker. The routes last til you rub them off. This was a great resource on our trip!

This map worked well for my trip to Chile. I would say it needs to be more detailed, but Chile is a very difficult country to be on map, so I would not hold it against them.

This is a pretty good guide, however you must have some knowledge of Warblers to begin. Still, I highly recommend it for beginners. Beautiful images with several perspectives and various plumage phases. My big problem with Warblers is that where I live, they are always in migration, so I get 2, sometimes 3 different versions of the same bird, like breeding plumage and non-breeding plumage, plus the females. Female Warblers always throw me off.I highly recommend this guide, particularly for the Fire HDX, but I can't imagine the paperback being worse : )

The "confusion" began falling away by the time I reached the 50th page! By page 100 I had gained an entire toolbox to use in the field. Spring or fall, here in the eastern US, I feel confident about my ability to identify our warblers since studying this wonderful book. I was prepared for a very nice guide when I read the information available before publication. I was not prepared for the level of excellence I found when I actually had the publication in my hands (on Kindle!)This book is so awesome that I also purchased a paper version of it! I can't think of any aspect of warbler identification it doesn't cover and the photography is unparalleled. I truly believe anyone interested in birds, especially getting to know/identify warblers in the US and Canada, will love this book!When The Warbler Guide first came out in the Kindle edition, the page numbers were not included, making it impossible (or very difficult) to use the song supplement that is available for purchase. I contacted the authors and just today received notice that the pages are now included! (If you purchased the Kindle edition before today, you may need to delete it from your device and redownload it from your cloud to have the numbers display. If you are unsure how to do that, Amazon customer service will see you through.)

What an incredible book. It has taken years to produce what can only be the ultimate guide to Parulidae, the Wood Warblers we all love to see in their glorious spring plumage. At more than 500 pages for 81 species, the coverage is amazing. Generally, I am not a fan of photographic field guides: it is almost impossible to capture all the relevant details in a photograph. However, this book is the exception. Instead of a single photo for each species, the book contains photos of every important feature of the birds.Choosing a page at random, I found myself on the account for Black-throated Gray.Icons at the top of the page provide a silhouette, a "quick impression" sketch, a picture of the tail, a small range map, and a sketch of the preferred habitat.That is followed by three photos showing the bird in profile, the underparts, and the "tail in your face" view that is all too typical of warblers. The following page first shows four distinctive views of the main field marks for the bird, including an extreme close-up of the yellow lore spot that is the "killer field mark" for this species. The rest of that page contains 12 more photos.Next, we are presented with a page showing similar species that might confuse a birder.A section on Aging and Sexing reveals the many different plumage variations that you may encounter in the field, followed by range maps showing the species's permanent range as well as spring and fall migration routes.Finally, we have spectrograms for the many vocalizations. Frankly, I know that I should learn to read these, but I prefer to listen to actual sound recordings.This book is not really useful as a field guide. It is too large and specialized to carry into the field. It will join "Big Sibley" (The Sibley Guide to Birds) as one of the references I carry in the car to consult when I have a difficult ID to work out. A very valuable book that belongs in every serious birder's library.

Very nice guide with photos from all different angles and a lot of discussion to help you figure out which bird is which. I especially like the quick-finder guides near the beginning of the book: face view, side view, 45-degree view, underneath view, spring view, fall view--it's all here. You just find the bird or birds that "your" bird might be in the quick-finder pages, then turn to the main section for that bird or birds to see if you've identified the right one. In the main sections for each bird, there are sections for "if it's not this one, then what else could it be?" There also are sections describing the vocalizations of the birds, but I can't read human music, much less bird music, so I have no idea whether these descriptions would be helpful for someone capable of making sense of the notations. This is a substantial book printed on quality paper and filled with quality photos. No slop here!

Of all the bird books I own including all compilations and books on specific species, this has to be the best. Well organized, incredible detail, superb photos including details on song patterns and side by side comparisons of similar warblers. it's rather easy to tell this book was put together with much planing and thought. Well crafted in every respect.I'm not sure how much better it can get than this. The only thing I can think of that would be missing is a sound CD such as the one that came with the Stokes Birds book. That would have made a great companion however most if not all of these bird sounds can be found on the publc web site Xeno Canto.This book is a must for any Warbler lover.

Wonderful book that clearly and succinctly walks you through the process of pattern-welded blademaking. Of course, you still have to put in the work, but this makes it a little easier to understand the whys and the process.

The author does a very good job of explaining the process of forge welding metals to create Damascus steel. He also includes information about bringing out greater contrast in the works. It's hard to stop adding more to this...

Wish I could vote no stars. Book opened to page 98...upside down. Remainder of the book was the same and numbered incorrectly. Returning it and hoping the replacement is done correctly.

Great book about general damascus techniques, but not so much for actual patterns. I wish there were more illustrations of billet stacking and the resultant patterns.

Gives a lot of great patterns, techniques and I recommend it to any artist Blacksmith bent on producing quality knives.

Good variety of pictures of knives and articles.

Even though the contents seem to deliver the message by this master bladesmith, the edition of the book, it's designs and images in black & white that lack contrast, left me insatisfied. Maybe a next edition could manage to overcome this. Great book!

I have some programming experience from college in c and some post-graduation experience as an asp coder at a small startup. I had also done some jsp coding at that startup, but when it came time to go back and make my own jsp pages without an office full of people to answer my questions and provide me with code templates to work inside of, I was lost. This book is a very gentle introduction to servlets and tries very hard to be thorough. Definitely 5 stars for somebody who is new to servlets.

This is an excellent book that gets your hands dirty and gets you going in writing simple servlets in a matter of hours. The examples are short and best of all they work.

I'm quite disappointed in this book. Much of the book is devoted to listing the servlet API. I can get the API listing for free. What's not covered is the use of much of that API. If you're looking for an in depth book about servlets, I'm afraid I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

This book is just what a technical book should be. The exposition is clear and comprehensive; the layout-typesetting is very easy on the eyes; and the author has a pleasant though no nonsense style that makes this a pleasure to work with.The book provides good background material for the different topics it covers, without spoon feeding or "dumbing down." It goes on to cover advanced topics -- threads, JDBC, JSP -- decently. It doesn't try to be the "be all to end all" regarding these topics, but instead gives the reader a very solid introduction, and enough code to accomplish something worthwhile.I have this book, and the book from O'Reilly; and though I would recommend both, if I had to choose one, this book would win -- no contest!

This book does an excellent job of clearly and concisely showing how to create production-quality servlets. It provides useful foundation material about protocols and the Web, which you can skim if you already know this stuff. The servlet topics themselves are presented in a step-by-step manner that never leaves you "hanging". Anyone with basic Java programming skills should find this book suitable. Programmers with some familiarity with servlets should also find some useful suggestions for more effective techniques.I highly recommend it.

I found this book to be a very good buy. The first few chapters that go over the basic principals behind the internet and web development were well written and informative. But I can see that a more senior developer will probably already know most of it. I usually have a hard time finding a book that falls in the middle between novice user and hard core expericended developer But with this book, it hits the middle spot perfectly.I'm currently developing using jsp's and servlets and this book has been a good reference to me as well.

I haven't read the first edition but the second edition of this book is loaded with useful information, tips, and sample code. I especially liked the thorough coverage of JSP and custom tag libraries. The debugging, security, and deployment chapters were also very helpful. The book even includes a very insightful Web development primer that introduces all of the important areas of Web development (MIME, HTTP, sockets, etc.). The only thing missing that I would have liked to have seen is a chapter on using XML from servlets. Regardless, if you want to learn servlets and JSP, this book is the best place to start.

The book is good if you want to learn about servlets, but if you already know the basics, I'm afraid there is not much new here and the apparent whitewashing of the servlet api mismatch may falsely lead those wishing to bolster their already existing skills.

Just terrible. I really wanted to like this book. I believe the author has creative talent and that this could be a great guide if she worked with an editor and a photographer. Unfortunately as it is currently written, it's full of incomplete instructions, misspellings, and poor language ("This is the cord where the working cores are attached to." for example). The photos are poor quality. The reader can't follow the vague instructions or make out what the project is supposed to look like due to the photo quality. All in all a frustrating book to read and not at all worth the purchase price.

I should have read the reviews! I did macrame in the 70's and wanted to get back into it. Also, I wanted a book my husband could look at and understand without a lot of instruction from me. This book has NO clear instructions or guidelines to follow. There is no clear explanation of how to set up any of the projects and the pictures leave a lot to be desired. I should return the book. The author may be talented but is not able to put that talent on paper.

This book was simply a bunch of often blurry stolen images from blogs and other websites, compiled with awful, half formed instructions for projects that had no information about amount of cord, techniques used, or any actual usable information for each. It reads like a sloppy pinter estate board someone pulled together and self published. (Clearly, this is self published.) I would not be surprised if the author has never actually seen a macrame pattern let alone completed a project from their idea book.

This book is not helpful at all. The patterns are unclear, the technique is unclear, and they give you a website to go to that is a foot long, and what you get on the website is the same thing in the book. I'd throw it away, but I will let it collect dust first.

Honestly, I would give it a lower rating if I could. Half the book is just web links to pictures and the directions that go with it are just plain nonsensical. Such a frustrating, incomprehensible waste of money. DO NOT BUY.

This has very limited usefull information. Poorly laid out with missing steps to complete most of the projects. Author looks like they know what their doing. But can't dissiminate the information very well.

The pictures are the worst EVER. They are blurry and black and white and not of good quality. Total waste of money.

Seriously save your money, there are so many other good books out there. I have read and re-read the directions to make Sun and Moon Anklet and have no idea what the author is talking about. The directions are incomprehendable and I have been making macrame jewelry for several years now. The complicated web link given only shows a color picture of the anklet? with no additional instructions, but at least you can see it more clearly because the black and white pictures in the book are of poor quality. Very disappointing and not worth the $8 I spent on it.

I feel for something involving the topic of addiction, a book needs to jump right out and offer help and very helpful information right from the beginning. I had to read in quite a bit before I felt like there is information I needed.

Very informative for professionals and non professionals alike

Way too technical for the average person to understand. Way more detail than is needed to get a point across. If you are a doctor or scientist you might find it good reading. I am a fairly intelligent person yet I only understood about 10% of what he was trying to say.
