I'm in awe at the intricacies and adaptability of the human mind to be able to cope with horrors that are imposed by humans on to other humans....especially babies and children.I read this book during the early 90's while I was in my early 20's. Now almost 30 years later I have circled back around to it after experiencing a decade of deep healing from DID myself. While I never experienced these kinds of horrors myself, I did experience enough sexual abuse to divide into over a dozen alters.The story of The Troops has reignited in me the importance of compassion and grace towards those around us that need our understanding and not our judgements.Truddi, thank you for so bravely sharing your story and journey. It lives on even after you have now passed on to a more peaceful Loving place.

This book is gut wrenching. It is not easy to read based on the horrors and events that are described in this book. You find yourself crying and wanting justice at the same time; you want to pick up this child and run her away into a safe haven. This book helped me to find what I am going to school for now. I have bought 11 copies of this book, one at a time. Each time, I lend it to a friend with the promise of return, and they never give it back to me. I have re-read this book 5 times. WARNING-extremely graffic content.

This book was referred by one of my professors and I ordered it on a whim. I could not put the book down. At times it was emotionally hard to read (incest, sexual abuse and beastiality) however the travels of therapy were awe-striking. I do recommend for anyone unfamiliar with multiple personality disorder read the therapists note in the front so that you can comprehend where the book jumps around and why.

This is a dark story of child abuse so sickening that I now understand why people develop multiple personalities inside their head to escape the horrors of life. Frankly, I do not know how else Truddi would have survived her childhood.

The seller was great, it arrived really fast and exactly as described.The book itself I read a couple decades ago. It delves into forgotten memories and what the mind is capable of doing to protect itself after extreme abuse. If you have any interest in multiple personality disorder, or what a child abuse survivor might face to get help in the 80's then read this book because it will help you understand that not so long ago this was a "don't tell" subject that no one wanted to discuss.

I would say it takes a tremendous amount of courage it requires to read past the Introduction and complete the story. Be prepared for some heavy therapy with yourself if you are the survivor of sexual, physical and or emotional childhood abuse or have a close relationship with someone who has been a child victim. Years of therapy never provided this much insight into my own mother's mind and behaviors. It's so comforting to know this woman's story has been published for those who suffer in silence. Thank you to everyone who made it possible to get this book published. I'm grateful a friend recommended this book to me when I had difficulty understanding my own mother's behavior.

Gritty - adult audience only - but REMARKABLE. The troops for Truddi Chase offer a raw look at the affects of child abuse on the human psyche. What she did to survive - and what she chose to do with her 92 different personalities - is different than any other multiples story out there. Do not miss it. Gives you a true look at what goes on in the brilliant minds of those who have Dis-associative Identity Disorder.

"Love it" are the wrong words to describe my rating, but this is a deeply affecting book. I saw the author on Oprah years ago, and still remember her vividly. Be warned that this is a very disturbing true story.

Although experienced artists would not consider this a "complete" text by any means, it is nevertheless a very good beginner's guide. I started working with pastels for color, but this book has gotten me off to a good start with experimenting with oils. One of this book's strengths is that it is concise. Almost all of the information within this slim volume is essential for a successful start in oils, and it is nicely organized.With oils, quite a lot of the beginner's time is spent learning the properties of the materials used in the fabrication of the support and the materials comprising the various paint mediums--basically, how to build painting surfaces and mix paint properly. Another fundamental concept that is described well in this text is the 'fat over lean' approach that any beginner must learn. Without this knowledge, even artists with good draftsmanship will likely create oil paintings that are susceptible to cracking and yellowing. This book, though brief, offers solid teaching on these subjects. The section on underpainting is good, though perhaps a little too brief.Gorst's descriptions of how to express your own style within the context of acknowledged artistic approaches is straightforword and helpful. Good explanations of studio equipment, brushwork, varnishing, and career choices round out this terrific little beginner's text.

First let me say that the subject of oil painting in general is so vast that there is no way that a 120 page booklet, no matter how prettily laid out, can even begin to cover it.That said, The Complete Oil Painter is a very good quick reference for absolute beginners and anyone who needs a primer for basic technical information, such as:* How to stretch a canvas* How to clean your brushes* What is alla prima, or wet on wet, or scumbling in a few words or less.* How to you varnish a painting, and how long do you let it dry?For what it is, it is extremely useful. It is also very nicely organized and full of pretty eye candy pictures of brushes and nice full tubes of paint, etc etc etc. It has an index in the back, AND wonderfully, a glossary for all those folks who aren't used to art language.It does not pretend to be Mayer's Materials and Methods book, the basic painter's reference. It does not give a deep course in brushwork. It does not really touch on the design or build of a painting. It is not a book for anyone who is a trained painter, unless one has a few gaps in one's knowledge from the days when you fell asleep in your Methods class. Ahem.If you wish to teach yourself oils, and you don't care to know about things that you would learn in a drawing class, such as how to build a visual work, value, texture, design, space, etc etc etc, then this is an excellent book that can help you a great deal.I learned more than a few things myself. Such as what happens to oils over time when you paint over an acrylic gesso or layer. Such as how to use rabbit skin glue to make a canvas covered board. What can I say, I ran out of Methods class the day we covered rabbit skin glue, because the stuff smells so abominable! There are quite a few nice tidbits that make this book worth purchasing. Thus the 4 stars. It is what it is, and it is a good reference in a limited sense for the beginner. But it is by NO means a COMPLETE reference.

If you are looking for a beginner reference book this is pretty much up your ally. It covers the same stuff all other beginner oil painting reference books cover with no real difference. I purchased it expecting a little more indepth material (the reference to professionals duped me I guess) but sadly it is more or less the same as the other reference book I have on my shelf (just with different pictures).I opted to give it 4 stars because it is pretty complete and if you are looking for a more basic book this is your deal.

Gorst does an excellent job in walking the beginner through what they need and need to know to get started. It's promoted as being suitable for professional artists (I presume professional oil painters) - I'm not sure that an experienced painter will find much of use here. The images are good, providing an array of styles available with this medium. The subjects he chooses for the step-by-step practices are of a level of competancy not usually found in a beginner's book. Typically I've found the examples in other books to be rather bland - if you can reproduce the examples in here then you'll certainly have some paintings worth hanging.My library of art books is approaching something like 250 items, covering all sorts of media as well as art theory, appreciation, history etc. The one thing that has struck me while pulling that collection together is, for the most part, Watson-Guptill produce an excellent range of books. The WG range aims at getting the beginner to an intermediate level ASAP and produce some quality art in the process, as opposed to the standard amateurish twee fare that other publishers, namely North Light Books, have folks churn out.An excellent introduction to the world of oil paints. 100% Recommend.

OMG! Man, talk about one wild rollercoaster ride. A whirlwind of emotions and events that feed from the excitement and nerve racking tension that brings this bad boy roaring to life brilliantly. All twists and turns, ups and downs, along with a few glitches and bumps here and there pull you deeper into this raging storyline and hard hitting plot. Throw in all the drama, intrigue, uncertainty, fear, danger and suspense and you have one intense, page turning bombshell that grabs your attention and holds it from start to finish. The chemistry between the characters are intense, mind blowing and palpable. The characters are complex and so believable it feels like you can just reach out and touch them. The scenes are so graphic and detailed it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. You have no trouble picturing every scenario as it plays out perfectly. Helen definitely nailed this bad boy 100% on point with such realism it really pulls this treasure together flawlessly. What a unique enjoyable and entertaining read. The whole Academy and how everything work there was fascinating definitely had me captivated from beginning to end. Also plenty of action, intrigue, and of course steamy romance add in to mixed to sweeten the deal. My only issue was the cliffhanger I didn't want it to end. So looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. Okay, I can't even begin to explain how excited I am about this new series. I adore kick ass heroines who are good with weapons, and Marcella is just that! This first book seems to focus mostly on her perspective, and the POVs offer a lot of insight of her from the guys' view, so we gain a really good idea of who Marcella is and what she can become. The guys themselves are hot and I can't choose a favorite, but that's the point isn't it? I love the blend of two of my favorite authors. I think the two writing styles go well together while offering individuality between the characters that can be lacking with a single author read. The distinction between the two authors adds to the diversity of the characters and story. My only complaint is that I seriously can't wait for the second one. LOVE IT!

Helen Scott has created a complex but understandable and engrossing world in this book. In this book, there is an important difference between pureblood vampires and mixed blood vampires, the latter being called stained. As you might imagine from that moniker, they are looked upon with some disdain by the purebloods. Groups of young half-blooded males band together into brotherhoods of 5 males each, and a group is completed by a sixth person, a female princess of pure blood who has been groomed to be the lynchpin of the brotherhoods.This book depicts how one brotherhood acquires their Sixth. It is told from the perspective of all five members of the brotherhood as well as from one of the young pureblooded women who may become their Sixth. The story is very complex, both in backstory and current plot line.I almost stopped reading this book after the first page. I don't consider myself averse to profanity, but I found the constant use of profane language to be offputting. Knowing that this book would have other narrators besides the first, I stuck with it in hopes that others wouldn't swear as much. Most of them still did swear a fair amount, even the female, with only one who seemed to abstain. Aside from my complaint about the swearing, I also didn't think that the six characters had unique enough individual voices; they sounded too much alike. My other complaint is about issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage. Commas are not used often enough (like between independent clauses in a single sentence) and are used too often when they shouldn't.While I found it offputting at first, I did actually find this to be a compelling read. The heroine is much put-upon by so many people who abuse and undervalue her. It was interesting to watch her connection grow with these strangers given her rather solitary existence.I received a free advance copy, but this did not affect my review.

It was good to see the characters grow and become stronger as the story line progressed. Each had their own powers that completed the group. The story had plenty of action and drama and this looks like a good beginning to an interesting series! Jump in and don’t get left behind!

The subtitle differs a bit in two editions, "wilder" being subtracted, but the gist remains: a journalist, born in what was post-war Carmarthenshire, returning to his homeland to uncover intriguing stories and lots of anecdotes. Since this is a collection of pieces written over the past quarter-century, it does lack a controlling theme, although the entries are arranged in roughly thematic sections: people he knows, those from the past that he wishes he knew, and then on to more historical and localized events. My only caveat, which took this rating down, was the lack of any map. For non-Cymric readers like myself, a chart of Wales and the sites mentioned in his many itineraries would have been invaluable. Without it, there's a too-random feel as one entry follows another across his homeland, although this is not a fault of the essays themselves, only their compilation for a wider audience. Rogers writes chattily but hides beneath an affable nature his considerable craft in getting an article of one or two thousand words to reveal a great deal about both his own diligence in constructing a well-made essay and his intelligence in arranging details to build up to an often movingly narrated conclusion. He's also a master of getting you hooked from the start, and his stylistic tic of addressing the reader as "you" may hearken of an old-fashioned epistolary nature, but it does keep one's interest and moves the various stories along quickly.I have not said much about the actual contents of these collected tales, but suffice to say that although the wildness of many of them may be due more to mental than geographical conditions encountered, that they serve not only to entertain but to educate. Rogers avoids the cutesy details, the eccentric exaggerations of his subjects, or the folksy embellishment. As a native Welshman, and the first in his family line to actually write in English, his knowledge of both sides of the Welsh story means that this is a more rooted, rather than impressionistically superficial, excavation into the principality. His own pride, without being inflated or vain, about his hometown and its environs makes for a series of encounters that show his unending curiosity into the foibles and fantasies of his fellow countrymen and women makes for realistic, yet memorably distinctive, assorted conversations and ruminations. The untranslatable "hireath," a longing and a loyalty for the Welsh heritage and its manifestations, emerges in these pages of Rogers' travels.

For those of us who used to eagerly await the arrival of the Sunday papers to read his column, this collection of articles by the great Welsh storyteller is a long-awaited treat. Myth and history are given that contemporary insight that makes you feel that you can reach out and touch what is described and the contemporary is given a mythic quality that only a writer who has kept his sense of wonder can evoke.
