It’s always fun to catch up with the ladies of the First Wives Club, almost like hanging out with your best friends. Shannon is the last of the wives to find true love after their arranged marriages and her biological clock is ticking away. The most reserved of all the ladies, she has a plan and a trip to Mexico is the perfect time to set that plan in motion. Alas, the best laid plans don’t always work the way they should. If this is your first time reading this series, you owe it to yourself to start at the beginning and read the others. You won’t be disappointed. Always sad to reach the end of a series but I’m sure this author will wow us with something else just as romantic and fun.

I've been reading Catherine Bybee's books for a while now. Loved her Weekday Brides Series, Not Quite Series and A Most Likely To Series. Her First Wives Series is full of friendship, trust, love, adventure and heartwarming events. I have to admit that Faking Forever is my favorite of the First Wives Books. Shannon and Victor's love story will have you laughing, mad, emotional and wondering what will happen next. Just because Shannon is the quiet one of the group doesn't mean she will sit back and let Victor dictate what will happen. You really get to know her in this book and how she is the foundation for all her friends. Catherine has out done herself again! So, if you haven't read Faking Forever, get your copy today and enjoy Shannon and Victor's adventure. You will LOVE it! I can't wait for the next book in this series, Say It Again, which I have already preordered. Don't forget to go back and check out her other series too.

Author Catherine Bybee ROCKS each story she writes. I loved Victor and Shannon’s story in Faking Forever. I found myself smiling and laughing whenever Victor was around. I really enjoyed the witty dialogue and banter throughout this book. Shannon showed that she was no pushover just because she was the quiet one. Loved that Samantha and Blake made a cameo appearance as they were my first Catherine Bybee couple I read and fell in love with. I cannot wait to read the last book in this fantastic series.

Grace under pressure is Shannon. With her Wedding / photography business moving right along, she finds she is missing something or someone. Surprising her close knit friends, that she wants a baby, but no baby daddy. She decides to take action when she flys to Mexico for a wedding. Will she be able to go through with her plan? Will fate have another path for her?Absolutely, loved Shannon and Nick. Romance and passion, with a little hummm. You'll want to read this one for sure!

I homeschool my two children, ages 12 and 7, and this book has been an excellent resource. I have used it coupled with Story of the World and sometimes History Odyssey by Pandia Press. The illustration are interesting and enough to give a feeling for the time and the summaries are well written, but the icing on the cake are the internet links at the top of each two page section. There are great activities and more in-depth information. If you child is passionate about a particular topic, the book provides the resources for them to pursue it in depth. Money very well spent.I highly recommend this book for elementary to middle school aged children, homeschooled or not.

As a Home Learning family, we have enjoyed this book very much: great illustrations and short descriptions. As usual, what is called "World" is not a fair representation of world history, but very Euro-centric with smatterings of other cultures. Having said that, it does a better job than most, partially because it shows respect for other cultures instead of representing them as "other" or more offensively, "exotic." I also wish it would have more information of the modern era.I wish the book were better designed so the pages open better. It's smallish and thickish so it's hard to keep open.

This is a very nice book for the content, and I would recommend it as a resource for education. My complaint is that I purchased the book based on the “like new” description. Clearly, as you can see from the photos, this Book was NOWHERE near “like new” condition and unfortunately I bought based on this description. It was also packaged as “inspected” however the cover was clearly ripped from the binding. Anyway, just a warning for those purchasing from used listings, that the description of used may not be accurate/deceptive.

I am so pleased with this book. It is full of interesting illustrations and just enough information to make my grand daughters want to find out more. The internet links are comprehensive and very helpful. Usborne always comes through with thoughtful and well put together books. We will be using this book along with others when we start Home schooling. But even now, my four year old grand daughter is interested enough that we have checked out some of the links. The book is in near perfect condition as well, even though I bought it used.

To touch on other comments: there is some religion. There are a few links that don't work anymore. Yes, you can find some of the links yourself. The type is NOT too small.We used this book AND the kingfisher book for 6 months within our studies of ancient history at a 3rd grade level. Our family of 5 unanimously agreed that this usborn book is far superior to the kingfisher book.There is a timeline on the bottom of every page for the spatial learner to see where they are within the context of time. The pages are illustrated nicely and appropriately. Items are labeled for the compulsive reader. The index is comprehensive. The breadth of information is appropriate for kids, under the heading of "put it before them and let them feast." If there is something your child wants to know more about it, for all means, look it up online or in other resource books. Many of the links provided will yield endless hours of additional information (and while you can look them up yourself with a search engine, I have three kids and am not interested in searching through pages of links, and I found it very helpful to have a ready-to-go link handy).The comments about religion vs evolution are interesting... I personally don't think it is possible to provide a comprehensive overview of history without some sort of slant. We are a Christian family who also believes in science and evolution, and I am competent and smart enough to use the information in these books as a tool with my kids to teach them about what OUR beliefs are. People who are blaming the information in this book are perhaps expecting this book to parent their kids for them.After six months of side-by-side weekly usage between this usborn book and the kingfisher book, this is - in the opinion of our household - a better book, with more interesting illustrations, better written text for kids, and providing in general a better single resource. If you are comparing the two books, this review was for you.

As a frequent visitor to NYC, I found this book to be quite refreshing. I learned a little history about places I'd seen, but knew anything about.The photographs were a great addition, beautiful and clear. The small tidbits of information made it just a bit more personal. I have recommended it to friends who are making a journey to the,"City" and can't wait to go back and treasure hunt these places out.

I am Native New Yorker & learned so many new places. I had the book laying on my shelf and another local browsed & loved it so I gave it as a gift—now I need to buy another!!!

Disappointed. Am in NYC as I write this. The Chaim Gross Village Studio doorbell went unanswered (on a Friday after 1pm). I couldn't find the Microcosm down the dark Cortlandt Alley. And no sign of the Berlin Wall segment in Midtown. I guess it's time to update the book.

A treasure of a book about fun places in New York City-- many of them rare finds, even for those of us who have lived near the city all of our lives. I have bought other books Off The Beaten Path series. This book is light reading. There are many interesting places listed in the book. They are not high traffic and over priced places. I like the places because they are more a personal level. You get the kind of one on one attention. I am going to continue adding the other series either to my kindle or hard copy collection.

This book was very reasonably priced and very useful during our trip to Maine. it arrived in a reasonable amount of time.

If you've ever traveled Interstate 95 trying to enter Maine on any given summer holiday weekend, you've probably wished you'd stayed home except for the fact that the lure of Maine's vacationland can be overwhelmingly pleasant. It seems like the entire east coast verges along this highway and ends up in a bottleneck at those darned toll booths. From the rugged rocky coast to the remote Allagash region, the beauty and fun is unparalleled.The canoes and kayaks atop the cars, the bicycles on the back and the hundreds of recreational vehicles heavily hint toward their occupant's destinations, while others most likely have been poring over guidebooks to find something a tad different to experience on their holiday. This guidebook has been revised many times in an attempt to help people find those "unique places" not often found on a map or easily accessible website.I pored over this guidebook and thoroughly enjoyed my "trip." There are many unique places listed, but if you are thinking of extremely remote areas, this book would not be what you are looking for as I would say that most of the places are fairly accessible. Lodging, top area annual events, historical vignettes, and many other tidbits of information are included. In Love Throughout, Misti Gil shares with us 66 ways that God loves us. Who knew? It is very eye opening and reassuring. She includes a few personal stories which makes the study more interesting and relatable. On those days when I doubt God's love for me, I will now be able to come back to this book and be reminded of all the ways He truly does love ME. The length of the book is perfect for me. Each day is short and to the point. It's more than a 5 minute devotional but less than an hour long Bible study. I highly recommend this book. It's obvious that the author is a teacher that has done her research and understands how to get her point across in an engaging way that grabs your attention.

I don't work in a field related to museums at all. I sell enterprise software, but a common problem plaguing all businesses these days is how to stay relevant in a world where the public expects a level of interaction that the classic didactic experiences don't provide. Consumers want a high level or personalization, and interaction creates rich "sticky" experiences. I would recommend this book to anyone in experience design, shopper marketing, or anyone who ever has to has to stand a trade show booth.One of the best things about this book is that she explains concrete approaches to make experiences more interactive and these are all based on case studies, there's little or no hand waving and pontification.

When I read the book I felt my self doing my PhD about modern museology. I learned designing participatory projects in cultural institutions and museums with an analytical and systematic approach. I learned developing visitor profiles and design methods for creating socially interactive environments in the museums and in cultural institutions. There are also very good and effective examples and case studies. I will use these designing methods in my work, which is designing and realizing museums both interior design and content development... Dear Nina, thank you very much ... I really made a great deal on this book. The concepts on participation are exactly what I've been looking for in the sense of a more relevant, fulfilling and inclusive visitor experience in a museum or cultural center. Along the reading, lots of ideas spring, because the way she conducts the reading is very inspiring.If you work with cultural centers, museums, this is a must read.I strongly recomend!The only thing it falls short on is the cover. I wasn't even half way trough the book and the cover is so thin (for a 250 page book) that it looked like the book went to war. A hard cover would have met up wiht the quality of the content.

Topic not beneficial for museum docents.

It was a required text for my Museum Interpretation class. It was worth the money, for sure. Would I have purchased it if I didn't have to? Probably not, but then I would have missed out on all of the great information within.

I am in the midst of writing my thesis on material culture and museums.This is book gives a clear and systematic path in how toapproach technical problems in the museum. This book is a delightful read, accessible even for those who are not involved in museum studies. I came to this book looking for ideas on how to create and support contributory learning experiences. I was delighted with the many engaging examples of successful participatory projects collected. Thoughtful analysis of each example was provided. Examples selected came from a variety of fields. This diversity really helped me to connect with the book even more, as I came to the book looking for cross-disciplinary insights. The book also does a great job of covering all aspects of design that need to be considered; establishing participation goals, evaluating and managing such projects.A truly delightful read, I highly recommend.

I thought I remembered my friend Art Petty saying that he liked Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters by Richard Rumelt. So, I emailed him and asked if that was true. Here’s his reply.“Like is an understatement. Rumelt’s kernel of Strategy is the most powerful, supple approach for creating clarity and coherence on strategy I’ve yet encountered.”Art’s no novice. He’s been an effective executive and an effective consultant for decades. He works with clients on strategy. And, guess what? The book lived up to Art’s recommendation and then some.The kernel of Strategy that Art referred to is a great reason to read the book, even if that’s all you get out of it. Here’s Rumelt’s description of the kernel.“A good strategy has an essential logical structure that I call the kernel. The kernel of a strategy contains three elements: a diagnosis, a guiding policy, and coherent action. The guiding policy specifies the approach to dealing with the obstacles called out in the diagnosis. It is like a signpost, marking the direction forward but not defining the details of the trip. Coherent actions are feasible coordinated policies, resource commitments, and actions designed to carry out the guiding policy”.The kernel isn’t a magic formula. It’s a guide to the most important hard work you will do to create a strategy. If you’re a consultant, it’s a quick way to help you figure out if your client has a strategy or not. As Rumelt points out in the book, a lot of things masquerade as strategy. Plans and slogans and goals can look like strategy until you analyze them with a tool like the kernel.What makes creating a great strategy hard is that it involves choices, and we don’t like choices. Art says that, since reading Rumelt, he spends more time on the strategy process. He spends half of the time on diagnosis, another 40 percent on what Rumelt calls the guiding philosophy, and 10 percent on coherent actions. It’s much harder to do it that way than it is to go off to an offsite and whip up some generalities that sound good but don’t have much impact on day-to-day work life.Here’s what it comes down to. The kernel is the way you develop a good strategy. The kernel is also the way that you identify bad strategy, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. Now that I’ve read this book, I won’t think about doing strategy the same way ever again. Rumelt has helped me know some danger signals to watch for. And he’s given me a language for guiding the process of creating and evaluating a strategy.The kernel is reason enough to buy and read this book, but there are lots of other goodies here, too. There’s analysis of many business situations that I found both absorbing and compelling.There’s one other thing you can take away from this book. Even when you do the work to create and execute a good strategy, you can still not succeed. You can make bad choices, even with a good process. Luck still plays a role. Unforeseen events play a role. The competition plays a role.This book was written in 2006. Rumelt makes several predictions about how some things will play out in the years ahead. He gets some of them right, some of them wrong, and some of them a mix of both. That’s a good thing because it demonstrates what’s true in real life. There are times when you can do everything wrong and have things turn out right. And there are times when you can do everything right and still go down in flames.One of my favorite quotes about life is from the American writer and horseplayer, Damon Runyon. Rumelt's `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' provides a refreshing, straight-forward take on business strategy basics. Written in an informal tone, the reader can immediately connect with the author. The book demonstrates strategies from large corporations and his personal anecdotes. Rumelt cuts through the common strategy jargon and differentiates real strategy from misguided goal setting. The book follows this pattern, through Chapter 6, at least. Then somewhat unexpectedly, the book turns from `straight-shooting' business strategy to theoretical concepts and meandering stories, leaving the reader wondering, `where exactly this book is headed'.On the positive side, the book is worth its purchase price for the clarity Rumelt offers on how to create good strategy. He uses the `kernel' method emphasizing the need to identify the structure of a current business challenge, choosing a `guiding policy' for dealing with the challenge, and lastly designing a series of actions or resource allocations in order to implement the `guiding policy'. With his solid advice and focus on action items as the underlying mechanism for effective business strategy, it begs the question in today's market, `how can so many of today's corporations issue strategies that are `fluff' and no action. Rumelt hits the nail on the head with the majority of the examples he uses, one of which, after peeling away the layers of a corporate bank's `strategy' the core message is a bank exists to be a bank. Rumelt uses the bank example to show what strategy is not. Strategy is not a goal setting, is not a budget and is not a laundry list of lofty desirable outcomes. Good strategy is specific and action-oriented.In the same vein, another positive point for the `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' content is that Rumelt identifies the core element to initiating a good strategy: "discovering the critical factors in a situation" and creating a set of actions to deal with the situation. The emphasis on taking action is a key component of the book. It is often missing in the cultural jargon and `fluff' that other strategic books espouse. In this book, strategy is not disguised as a company's mission and/or values. Additionally, Rumelt highlights that a coherent strategy does not consist of companies with too many objectives; as this ultimately results in a loss of focus.On the other side of the coin, after Chapter 6 the reader will need to have patience to work through the concepts and examples Rumelt presents. It would be most beneficial if the reader is already well-versed in management strategy and/or has years of on the job experience in order to best apply and thoroughly understand his examples on proximate objectives, chain-link systems and inertia and entropy. The examples come more from his personal consulting experiences and the demonstrative stories are not as direct and to the point as the examples in his first few chapters. The overarching concepts are relevant to strategy, but again unless the reader is well-versed in management strategy the application or replication of these concepts may prove difficult.Overall, `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' is a recommended read for those interested in business strategy. The no-nonsense approach is refreshing and there are definite `pearls' of strategic wisdom in the book. There are a myriad of examples from history and business cases in which Rumelt's strategic advice draws upon. However, the reader should keep in mind that the later sections of the book are lackluster compared to the first few chapters. With that said, the book should still be given a chance and is worth its investment. All in all, the book is a `mixed bag', but take a chance and see for yourself.
