About the Author

Frank Miller began his career in comics in the late 1970s and rose to fame while first drawing, and then writing, Daredevil for Marvel Comics. He was also the creative force behind BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS, BATMAN: YEAR ONE and BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT STRIKES AGAIN. His many works have not only redefined classic characters, but also, on a few occasions, revitalized the comics industry. His multi-award-winning graphic novel 300 was brought to full-blooded life in the 2007 motion picture of the same name, and in 2008 he directed the feature film Will Eisner's The Spirit. His creator-owned crime saga Sin City first hit the page in 1991, and then the silver screen in 2005, with Miller on board as co-director with Robert Rodriguez. The two returned to direct the sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, released in 2014 and featuring two new stories by Miller. Frank Miller takes Batman to the edge. Amazing artwork with a lot of detail in the hand-drawn line-work. A must read Batman story. I really love this graphic novel. If you want to read one of the greatest Batman tales ever told, look no further.

Absolutely awesome story! Raw, mature and gripping. The world feels a bit like the Robocop dystopia. Since Batman is rooted more towards the gangster and villainous world, the mild SiFi approach seems like a breath of fresh air to the characters. The girl-Robin is also a very brave and favorite decision of the authors.The drawing is not my favorite style, which doesn't mean it's bad. On the contrary - the characters feel well shaped and like real humans. The action scenes with the big machines give sense of volume and scale.This is a must read indeed.

This is a review of the Kindle version only.I read this graphic novel 20 years ago and I loved it. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is completely unreadable. The panels are so small that the art work is obscured and the lettering is tiny. Trying to enlarge it does not help at all.

The best comic of all time. This anniversary issue is the epitome of this book. Frank Miller writes an amazing dark and gritty story set in a dystopic version of Gotham City which just sucks you in from the start. If you like Batman, especially the Dark Knight, and the dark and twisted side of that movie, I highly recommend this graphic novel. Plus it's super cheap on Amazon and the quality is awesome.

The kindle version is treated well. It looks great on my HD10 fire tablet with great image quality.The story is still powerful with amazing artwork.The first book of the four in the graphic novel still gives me chills when the Batman returns in full force after being retired for decades.If you have never read this graphic novel, do yourself a favor and spend an evening in a dark room and let yourself fall into Frank Miller's visionary tale of Batman's elder years.

My oldest brother had the original version of the book and I had read it so many times as a child that I fell absolutely in love with it. As years passed the original copy was lost and I had a really hard time finding it at a reasonable price. So when I found this 30th anniversary edition on Amazon for less than $20, brand new, I had to jump at the opportunity and I was NOT disappointed at all. This is my all-time favorite Batman story and I will continue to enjoy reading it for as long as I possibly can.

If you have not read this, quit looking down your nose at graphic novels and read this book. If you have, buy this edition—there are all sorts of bonus goodies that add great context to the publication of this story back in the mid 1980s. This is certainly one of the best comics ever crafted, and I don't think many would argue with that.

Absolutely the best version of Batman ever written. Frank Miller rescued the Great Hero from the camp of the sixties and seventies and took it back to the anti-hero that was originally intended. If your Comics fan this is an absolute must read.

I know everyone loves this comic, but I am really just not a fan of the art style here

Several decades ago, I lived in Thailand for a year. It was a wonderful country and while it hasn’t changed as far as being a stable place to visit, other countries in Southeast Asia back then were not places an American could go or should go unless sanctioned by Uncle Sam. I am so glad I can now go to Vietnam and Laos and Cambodia. Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia are also included in this book.The author, Antonio Araujo, has done some excellent research on this book listing some incredible places to stay on a budget. He has the book set up by city within a country, 50 cities, and has at least two hostels for each city, so there’s quite a bit of research in this book. He has the name and address of each hostel, a clickable map, a rating, the price per night and a clickable Book Here link so you can make your reservation through Hostelworld. Plus he goes into quite a bit of detail about that particular hostel.The hostels are set up along the backpacking trail that runs through Southeast Asia that people have been traveling for over four decades. It starts in Thailand, through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and back to Thailand. And then on to other coutries. Some of the hostels charge as little as $3 while some go up to close to $20, still a bargain is you ask me.

This book has by far one of the best list of budget hotels and they even have a rating for each hotel. We're planning a trip to bangkok and the section on thailand alone is well worth the price of the book. I highly recommend it.

This is a very informative book which I am looking forward to using. I am intending to visit Southeast Asia and was unsure where to start when it came to booking hotels in the various places I am looking at visiting. Armed with my map I am having great fun already looking up the places mentioned by the author.One of the great things about this book is that it gives great descriptions of the hotels, their location, the sort of district they are in, and how quiet or lively they are. It also gives prices although I realise these may vary as time goes by but is still a useful indication. So you know you are up to date with everything, each hotel as a link which gives a map, pictures, description and booking information.Somehow I think I will be hooked. I visited Singapore a few years back, and the hotels in this book has bought the memories flooding back and somehow I think there will have to be a lot more trips to Southeast Asia.

Planning my next trip to southeast asia, it has served me well to outline the accommodation options there. Affordable and pretty convenient spots to stay on your vacations. Highly recommended.

Listen, I'm not a fan of self help books. I've got nothing against them, they've just never been for me. I find myself rolling my eyes on the first page, even if the information is objectively valuable. This series is AMAZING. I started with the original Don't Sweat the Small Stuff, and branched out to the work version. I've had this book for ages now, and I have to tell you, implementing the tips in this book have changed my life at work drastically. I no longer spend precious time angry at the world, my coworkers, and my boss. I'm a more pleasant employee to be around and I smile more, making my 8 hours go faster. My yearly review was actually better this year after putting some of these pieces of advice into practice. Highly, HIGHLY recommend both this and the original version. They are life changers!

The book seems like it was rushed. My worst critique is that I think it was written on the tail end of the first "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" bestseller. A lot of real common sense advise that comes no where close to the insights from the original best seller. For instance, tip #14 Don't Sweat the Demanding Boss (which one could argue is the whole premise behind why someone would pick up this book) suggests to not take their behavior personally, observe how you contribute to the situation, and understand that every person has a good side to them. Crappy advise like that is peppered all over this edition. During several "strategies" Dr. Carlson plainly reveals that he is writing the strategy while in route to a different city or during a two hour flight from "San Diego to San Francisco." I think he wrote this book very sheepishly to ride on the coattail of the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" original bestseller.

I was poised to leave my current job, I already had given my notice. I was completely fed up with the job. Then I spotted this book at the local Barnes and Noble. I decided to skim it. Then, I couldn't put it down. I must have sat for more than an hour skimming it. This is not a long book. So, I read a substantial part of it. The next day, I told my boss that I was staying. After that, I bought the book from Amazon.This book helped me realize that I had been sweating the small stuff. I don't want to make it sound like the change was like flipping a switch. After all, a switch once flipped on can easily be flipped off (e.g. Seinfeld's "Serenity Now"). What meaningful change is ever easy? I know about meaningful changes. I used to weigh 200 pounds. Now, I'm fit and trim. I exercise every day. I have kept the weight off for ten years now.Changes are "grindingly difficult" (to borrow a phrase). This book may help you tip the balance in the right direction.

I really enjoy this book. I was having trouble with my new job and this book pointed many struggles that I was facing. It made me realized that I was not alone in feeling the things I was feeling. I definitely recommend this book if you are struggling with your position at work.

I think too many people in the psychology profession are snobby when it comes to analyzing social science works adored by the general public. If the books or writers become too successful then they are dismissed as being "pop." This certainly has been the case with my peers in regards to the Dr. Richard Carlson "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" series. They could not be more wrong, however. This particular offering is a monograph of considerable value. Other than this primer, I had only read the original, "...and it's all small stuff", edition. I found that, while the majority of his observations might not strike one as pure genius, they are steeped in common sense and are quite insightful.The theme here is "you be the adult." Even if your co-workers are acting like a bunch of ignorant sixth graders, you must rise above it. You're better than that. You'll forgive, work, and move on. Office politics is a fleeting and shallow endeavor. Keep your eyes on what you want in life. Many of those around you will be forgotten in a few years time and there's no reason to obsess over their opinions. They don't matter and, while you should be as kind and friendly as is possible, your long-term goals and aspirations are what counts. With annoying and dominant co-workers, when you lose your temper you tranfer power to them and give them the satisfaction that they have been looking for. Being above the frey is the last thing they want, but that's exactly where you should be.One of my favorite things that Dr. Carlson argues is that being relaxed and comfortable is essential to job performance and productivity. Further, there is nothing lazy or shameful about being in a good mood while on the clock. Do you help the company or institution by walking around like a grump so people have to proofread continuously what they're about to say to you? Certainly not. The wisdom is this book is not complex but it's not something that you will automatically figure out on your own.Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work is written in the same style as his other texts. It is extremely reader friendly as it is small and fits into a coat pocket. There are 284 pages which are efficiently broke up into 100 chapters. It won't take long to read, but, if you're like me and have had lots of difficulties dealing with the emotional baggage of others during your career, you will savor it for a long while. Dr. Carlson did us a great service by examining this subject.

The premise of this book is pretty unique in my reading. The book is written, as the title will clue you in, as if it's the memoir of a female natural historian of what is essentially alternate Victorian England. It's a lot to take in but it works surprisingly well.Our memoirist, the eponymous Lady Trent, starts off the "memoir" introducing the reader to herself as a child and relating her early and lasting fascination with dragons and the research of dragons. From the asides and tone of the book you learn that Lady Trent is now an older lady who has become famous during her lifetime for her discoveries, which let her get away with a lot of things that a less-famous and younger lady would not be able to pull off.I did like that there were some original ideas in this iteration of dragons - it's always great to see something new brought to the table. With the scientific approach to dragons there was an emphasis on some things that usually get glossed over, like the physics of flight and commercial uses of things relating to dragons (trying to avoid getting adding spoilers). I also liked the quirk of dragon remains being extremely difficult to preserve and this presenting a real challenge for science.This book really appeals to a lot of things I like - fantasy, dragons, Victorian/Regency mannerisms (fantasy of manners), and a fun adventure. Although there are definitely conflicts and some violence in the book, because of it being told at a bit of a remove because of the "memoir" format it never feels very immediate, which for me worked well with the Victorian/Regency style feel.While this is not my new favorite book it was definitely an enjoyable read. This was the first book in a series and I'd be more than happy to read the sequels!

I love this book so whole-heartily that I came to buy it's sequel (A Tropic of Serpents) and stopped by to leave a review because I just want more people to enjoy the wonder of this book. First off let me tell you, Lady Trent is one of the greatest narrators I have ever had the pleasure of spending an entire book with. I love her. She is a well-developed and lovable woman with real fears, concerns, and desires. She understands her limitations, she just refuses to let them hold her back.Now on to the real review.First the cons:Honestly, I can't really think of anything I didn't like about this book. It was just that good, I literally loved every part of it.Now the pros:1. Lady Trent is a realistic strong woman, she doesn't pretend to be a man. She knows that she isn't. She is a woman and she has a woman's concerns and limitations. She doesn't put down other woman because they haven't achieved what she has and although she does find her friend Manda Lewis's obsession with sensation novels a bit frivolous, I never did get the feeling she actually hated Manda or really held it against her.2. This book is about dragons. Dragons man. And they don't disappoint, there are some amazing illustrations in the book of these majestic and awe-inspiring creatures supposedly drawn by Lady Trent herself. They really enhance the mood and help you to understand Lady Trent's desperate obsession with figuring out how they work.3. Jacob, Lady Trent's husband, is a humorous and likable secondary character. I loved him and well I won't say much more. You'll just have to read it.4. Dragma and Lady Trent's relationship is hilarious and develops quite nicely over the course of the book.5. The book is an easy and quick read and has a steady pace. It will suck you in and it will be hard to put down. But if you must you can and will you pick it up again it will be easy to get back into the world and the conflict of the story.Buy this book, you won't regret it! It will be one of the best purchase you will make this year. I promise!

Written in the style of a memoir, the voice of Lady Trent is alternately proper and full of mischief. Although on paper they may sound similar, this has a very different feel from Naomi Novik's Temeraire series as the first-person voice is distictly feminine."A Natural History of Dragons" chronicles Lady Trent's early years and her first expedition, leaving plenty of space for future volumes. Thankfully, the story has a satisfactory conclusion rather than leaving the readers with a cliff-hanger as some first-of-a-series books do. The characterizations of various characters other than Lady Trent (and perhaps her husband) are somewhat two-dimensional and the I felt the pacing of the plot was a bit rushed at the end compared to the rest of the book, but the saucy narrative makes the book hard to put down.As an added bonus, the hardcover copy of the book is absolutely beautiful. The deckled edges combined with text printed in chestnut brown ink immediately evokes the feeling of holding a handwritten journal. Also, Todd Lockwood is amazing as usual and the inner illustrations of various draconic species are stunning and lovingly detailed in an elegant sepia ink. The fanastic cover needs no words. This is definitely a book to purchase as a hard copy.
