Well written, well thought out, good practical advice, and researched information, The big colored photos makes it easy to see what the recipe will look like once it is prepared. The recipes I have tried so far have been very flavorful, and tasted quite good! Easy to make with a few simple easy to find ingredients. There is a two-week meal plan towards the back of the book that will help you plan breakfast, lunch and dinner should you need to have it all done and printed out for you. Again, I have found the book to be useful, helpful, as well as, practical, and thus far, easy to maintain.
I found out that my blood pressure is borderline so I decided to start watching my sodium intake. The recipes in this book looks fancy however they are pretty easy to make. The recipes are separated in categories, meat, seafood, poultry and vegetarian. (see pics) At the bottom of each page/recipes the book tells you how much sodium each recipe contains.(see pics) To be honest I have tried several recipes from this book and they taste so good it is hard to believe that they are low in sodium. I will try these out for a month and see if my there is any change to my blood pressure.
Fairly typical recipes. I was hoping for some innovative ways to avoid salt, but still get big flavor. This was not bad, but not unique enough for me, either.
Great pictures, good recipes - easy to make and very tasty. I also appreciate how many vegetarian options there are because I am trying to lower my meat intake. I'm happy with the purchase.
My husband, who is a very active soccer player and NOT overweight, was diagnosed with very high blood pressure (170/110) at the very young age of 30 that we later discovered was genetic. Without being aware of how to use correct combinations in a DASH-Plus diet, we tried eliminating sodium and eating healthier but it still was not at a safe level, therefore, we had no choice but to start medication. This cookbook has been a Godsend, as my cooking skills without a cookbook leave much to be desired. I use this on a daily basis, flag the pages of food I m going to cook and type all the ingredients I will need in a word document and away I go to the grocery store. I am also making these recipes nearly 100% organic a well. Luckily, we have a local co-op that carries all organic food, finding nearly all the ingredients there is not an issue for me. Every once in a while I will have difficulty finding an ingredient, but it is never something that can't be skipped or substituted. In my personal opinion, if you are going to try to eat this healthy, why allow pesticides to be part of your diet? I love that we are eating something new and different everyday, we never get bored with this cookbook. The recipes are very flavorful and they incorporate many seasonings to hide the lack of sodium. This cookbook has broadened my cooking skills and exposed me to all kinds of new ingredients I have never eaten before. Many of the recipes call for leek, watercress, quinoa, bulgur, sage, cumin, coriander, etc. We are also starting to incorporate drinking fresh organic juicing in addition to this diet; I hope someday he can get off medication for good! I highly recommend it to anyone with high blood pressure.
We checked this book out of the library. After one renewal, we decided it was a keeper. We purchased one copy for ourselves and one for a friend.The format is reasonable - the recipes are easy to understand and the pictures are quite good. More importantly the recipes are very good. If you have problems with high blood pressure or concerns about your diet - this is an excellent book. Food that is good for you doesn't have to taste bad.
My wife and I have found a lot of tasty recipes from this book, even though one of us is a picky eater. We've put a lot of bookmarks in this after finding recipes we like. Instructions could be written a little clearer, but a careful read will solve that.Recipes use commonly-available items (in the USA) and standard methods. No great skills are needed here.
I had a heart attack last April and decided to get this book because my blood pressure spiked recently. I have tried 4 recipes already and they are all very good. It has plenty of pictures that show the food and is a great book not just for blood pressure but for overall healthy eating.
