Great book. Easy to read and understand. Great explanations and examples. However, found many numerical errors which should have been caught by the editor. Here are some errors.. Page 168 “Mattel made a net profit of 10.05 percent should be 12.1 percent. Page 170 Hasbro Current ratio calculation = 2.13 and the next line says it’s 2.61. Page 175, Calculating debt to shareholder’s equity, $3,067,044 Shareholder’s equity should be $3,067,044,000 and the 1.08 (Debt to shareholder’s equity) should be 1.12. Page 176 Mattel used $1.29 should be $1.12. Bottom line: Great Book. Just need to check the calculations and numbers, especially in Chapter 12. You can see I love the book from the detail I provided. It’s a staple in my home library. Great author. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to provide feedback.Julian Crawford
This is the single best book for beginner and intermediate-skilled investors. I believe most non-professional investors will find this an absolute gem. The writing is clear and actually fun to read. You will learn the basics of how to evaluate companies, but Epstein includes nuances that even more advanced investors will find useful.The book is valuable because of its appropriate coverage of 4 separate areas:1) Teaches the reader basic accounting. For example, what do different items on a cash flow statement really mean and how are they related to the balance sheet or the income statement?2) Once you understand basic accounting, it teaches you how to manipulate some of these numbers to get a better understanding of how well the company is doing. For example, what is the significance of inventory turnover?3) Points you to other sources for more information and greater understanding ie: different websites and how to get bond ratings on particular companies.4) Discusses pitfalls of analyzing financial reports. She discusses how companies manipulate numbers and how you can improve your chances of catching the culprits. She discusses 10 guilty companies.There are many great books investors should read, but if you were only allowed one then this should be the one. Bravo Lita!P.S. Like most Dummy books, they're great for short-cutting or reviewing almost anything.I wanted to refresh my knowlege of financial reports so I'd get more out of quarterlyreports on investments. Easy to understand and gives you plenty of information even ifyou don't have an accounting background.
Lita made a very accessible book for the novice trying to learn a very complex subject. I actually read this book everyday and the concepts are becoming more and more understandable. The learning curve for reading these reports are not exactly steep but do require daily practice (as with anything else) to really hone the skills needed to better analyze business either for possible investment vehicles or to improve your own business. Highly recommend this book. Very enjoyable and informative.

After a while I tire of skipping over the chatty fluff that one finds in the Dummies series. Can we get to the point, please? Otherwise a well written introduction.

I have read a number of books on investing, but in many ways this has been the most important. If you are interested in a book on how to be an accountant, this book is probably not for you. If you are interested in understanding financial reports, and be able to analyze a company's financial statements, this book is most certainly for you. It could very easily be one of the most important books on investing that you can read.It is also worth noting that the author explains everything in a very clear manner with excellent examples.
